The company claim that the new investment will help to create 300 jobs in the UK.

The plans include a series of energy storage schemes based at windfarms and strategic network points, the first being a 50MW battery storage project at the UK’s largest onshore project: Whitelee wind farm.

Other projects will target the digitalisation of the grid, including the implementation of artificial intelligence systems to control and balance the network. These smart grids will also allow customers to buy and sell electricity.

They also have plans for new public electric car charging services, to be installed at strategic commercial locations throughout the UK from winter 2019.

Beyond this year, the company want to develop a 1GW pipeline of onshore wind projects by 2025, after seeing substantial opportunities for the continued development of the technology across the UK.

“Our first investment plan since leaving coal and gas behind is a historic milestone for Scottish Power and is a vote of confidence in the UK’s commitment to decarbonise the economy." said Scottish Power's chief executive Keith Anderson.

“Consumers want and need access to reliable, clean and affordable energy. That is what Scottish Power is focused on delivering and as long as Government climate change commitments stay firm, with sensible policies to support them, this investment will continue.”
