Shell’s Basrah Gas Company to increase capacity by capturing flared gas

Shell Iraq have announced a final investment decision (FID) on a growth programme for the Basrah Gas Company (BGC) to increase their current capacity by 40%.

This will be accomplished by capturing flared gas from three major oilfields: Rumaila, West Qurna 1 and Zubair. The captured materials will be converted into dry gas for power generation and liquids both for the domestic market and for export.

The project investment will go into the development of the Basrah Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) project - a 400 million standard cubic feet per day greenfield gas processing plant equipped with two trains, each with a production capacity of 200 mmscf/d.

Gas flaring is a major waste of natural resources, with the World Bank putting estimated levels at 140 billion cubic metres in 2017. While other countries have previously made efforts to reduce flaring, it has been increasing in Iraq until very recently.

The BGC growth program will minimise the wastage caused by flaring in the region, while also reducing the associated greenhouse gas emissions.

It will also enable a step-change to more refrigerated liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports from the companies storage and marine terminal in Um Qasr port in Basrah.

“With BGC having recently achieved a new production level of over 1 bcf/d, Shell Iraq is proud to have now also reached this growth milestone with an industry-leading competitive project which can reduce gas flaring from the three Basrah oil fields, thus increasing dry gas supply and NGL export capabilities. This will bring significant and widespread societal benefit to the Basrah region in terms of jobs, the environment and security of energy supply”, said Marcus Antonini, vice president for Shell Iraq.

Basrah Gas Company is a joint venture between Shell, Mitsubishi and the state-owned South Gas Company. The FID was taken with support of all shareholders.
