The UK automotive industry is currently experiencing unprecedented demand for their products in emerging markets.
This is most evident in China and Brazil where demand for luxury marques such as Bentley, Jaguar and Land Rover are exceptionally high. At the same time, healthy sales figures in their more traditional markets, including the US and the UK are also being maintained.
To keep up with the increase in demand, output has to be increased and this translates to a heavy demand for Design and Development Engineers, with a war for talent being waged amongst the major manufacturers – Bentley, JLR, Ford, Caterpillar Perkins, JCB and others – as well as the large contingent of automotive suppliers and contingencies.
In addition, the move towards ever more energy-efficient cars means engineers in the electrical hybrid arena are in huge demand, and also in relatively short supply. The UK is fast becoming a centre of excellence for the development of low emission / hybrid vehicles; demonstrated by BMW’s decision to develop its new supercar’s Petrol Hybrid engine in the Midlands.
Couple this shortage of engineers working in the Automotive Electronics arena with the need for high skilled professionals to work on new emerging hybrid technology and it is safe to say there are exciting opportunities for Electrical Engineers within a broad range of skillsets and categories including:
- Powertrain / Chassis Electronics
- Switch Electro-Mechanical Development
- Wiring & Harness Design
- Safety & Comfort Electronics
- Infotainment & Driver Assistance
The high demand for this specialist skill set means the there a wide range of competitive packages available to automotive electrical personnel. Automotive employers also looking further afield to fill these roles; from Mobile Telecom to Aerospace. If you have the cross-industry transferable skills automotive manufacturers will be keen to speak to you.
