Tesla drives in a new dawn for solar power

We’ve all seen them – rows of houses with huge solar panels on the roofs, an area in which a solar salesperson clearly had a good day. While the benefits of the solar energy they’re providing can’t be ignored, the aesthetics of such technology can certainly cause problems.

It’s the excuse lots of people use when asked why they’ve not gone down that route. It simply isn’t a stylish look to have a huge, solar panel adorning your home. Curb appeal matters.

That’s just part of the reason why Tesla’s new solar powered roof tiles are lighting up the renewable energy industry.

Normal tiles with a big difference

Unlike their larger ancestors, Tesla’s efforts are almost indistinguishable from regular roof tiles. Without close up inspection, you wouldn’t notice anything different. That plays a big role in home owners’, and prospective buyers’, minds. This is solar power that helps the environment and looks good doing it.

The Apple effect

Beyond helping the customer, these tiles also look set to help the renewable energy wing of Tesla’s business efforts. As has been seen with Apple, fans of one product are more likely to buy another from the same provider. iPhone users buy Macs, for example.
With Tesla this so called ‘halo effect’ could see fans of their tiles more likely to buy a Tesla electric car and vice versa. They’re already a popular brand, and this recent output is sure to see their fan base grow.
Powering your home

Part of this tile launch saw the introduction of Powerwall 2, Tesla’s attempt at a home battery. This is designed to store any surplus energy created by the solar tiles and use it to both power your home and feed back into the grid.

Tesla shareholders are hopeful this will see profits grow. Their recent $2.6bn acquisition of struggling solar firm Solar City is set to plunge the company back into the red, but all of this investment has a long term aim in mind. With roof tiles now being capable of powering properties, and a battery designed to reap the benefits, we could be about to see the start of a new kind of energy ecosystem. Could solar power stop looking like an expensive fad and start being common place?

If so, Tesla will be at the front of the pack when it comes to its success.
