You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘Netflix and chill’ but what about ‘Netflix and drive’?

The idea of streaming Netflix or YouTube in your car sounds rather futuristic but the Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, confirmed on Twitter recently that the owners of his electric vehicles will soon be able to stream both Netflix and YouTube on the generously-sized in-car displays.

"Ability to stream YouTube & Netflix when car is stopped coming to your Tesla soon! Has an amazingly immersive, cinematic feel due to the comfy seats & surround sound audio," Musk tweeted.

Tesla has already unveiled games that drivers can play on the displays: in June, Bethesda studios announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that drivers would be able to play Fallout Shelter. Tesla has also released Cuphead and some classic Atari games, like Tempest. The company revealed last week that drivers would be able to play chess in the Tesla Arcade.

The cars will have to be parked for the video or games to work with the steering wheel becoming the players controller. The same will be the case with Netflix and YouTube streaming, although in a tweet Musk stated, "when full self-driving is approved by regulators, we will enable video while moving."

The Tesla CEO described the experience of watching video on Netflix and YouTube as similar to “an old-school drive-in movie experience, but with much better sound” “immersive, cinematic feel” thanks to the surround audio available via the Tesla’s audio system and its “comfy seats.”
In addition to allowing you to stream Netflix, Musk revealed that the V10 update will also bring improvements to Autopilot and Smart Summon across the Tesla fleet.
Although Musk didn’t give a specific date for turning Tesla’s into a place to pass time, he added that in addition to Netflix and YouTube, the upcoming V10 system will also bring improvements to Autopilot and Smart Summon, and a text-messaging feature.

Tesla seem to be leading the way when it comes to the technological advancements of cars showing that vehicles are becoming much more than just ways of getting from one place to another.

Will we start to see other car manufactures going in the same direction as Tesla?

There are still many uncertainties in the industry, but one seems clear these improvements and advancements in the automotive industry are creating new job opportunities for engineers to work on innovative projects with the worlds biggest automotive brands.
