If you’ve spent a day walking around a town, city or other busy urban environment then you’ll likely be aware that air pollution is persistent environmental problem that has a negative impact on tens of thousands of urban residents.

Now a German start-up believes it has found a solution to this problem.
Green City Solutions has created the CityTree, a moss-covered, intelligent, natural air purifier

A moss-covered, intelligent, natural air purifier called the ‘CityTree’.

Standing 4 metres in height the large surface area covered in moss and lichens filters nitrogen oxides, ozone and particulate matter. According Green City Solutions the CityTree can do the work of 275 urban trees. Or as they cleverly put it “a whole forest on a surface area of 3.5m2”

The company explains the working of the CityTree, and their intentions behind the invention, in further detail:

“Certain moss cultures have the ability to filter pollutants such as particulate matter out of the air by binding them to the leaf surface and then integrating them permanently into their own biomass. This makes them ideal air purifiers. But in cities, where air purification is a great challenge, mosses are barely able to survive due to their need for water and shade. The combination of shade-giving plants, a fully automated supply of water and nutrients and cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) can solve this problem. At the same time, the filter performance and the plants’ requirements can be measured and analysed. Put it all together and you have an intelligent, natural air filter for cities.”

Each CityTree is built with solar panels and water retention systems making them self-sustaining

Each CityTree is built with solar panels, water retention systems and require only a few hours of maintenance each year, making them fairly self-sustaining.

To date, you’ll be able to find CityTrees in countries such as Germany, Hong Kong, France, Norway, Belgium and Macedonia.

As governments across the globe ramp up their efforts to combat air pollution, it’s possible we’ll see the growth of a veritable forest of CityTrees.
