The steps Wood are taking to keep 10,000 Oil & Gas workers on site

Aberdeen-based Wood Group have revealed some of the steps that they are taking with the onshore and offshore operations in the Americas to keep operations going through the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the company, more than half of their employees are currently on-site delivering construction, maintenance, operations and technical services. That equates to almost 10,000 people retaining onshore and offshore jobs.

Doing so safely, and in compliance with social distancing requirements, has meant a series of significant changes in the way Wood employees work. But the company say that they have been committed to changing their processes for the safety of their employees.

In Trinidad and Brazil, for example, the company has increased offshore rotations from 14 days to 28 days, reducing the frequency of new arrivals and ensuring there is little to no risk of the virus being unknowingly passed between site and shore. Pre-mobilisation quarantine has also been implemented to further prevent a virus risk on site.

Daily temperature checks are being conducted on site, with Wood reporting that one of their teams in South Carolina has even fashioned plexiglass frames that allow those conducting the temperature checks to do so at a safe distance from the people they’re checking, for an extra level of protection.

“Our teams are committed to delivering technical excellence,” said Paul Leonard, Wood’s President of Operations Services.

“They understand the importance of teamwork. They are adept at problem-solving, and above all else they prioritize personal safety. So, during the midst of a global pandemic, when critical infrastructure becomes more critical than ever, it’s fitting that our teams are demonstrating some unique ways to keep their projects active and their people safe in the fight against COVID-19.”

Technology has also benefited operations, with tasks such as model reviews and systems audits being carried out remotely, reducing delays in future operations. Safety training is also being conducted online, and Wood have introduced specific Covid-19 training videos to ensure all teams are provided with a clear message on what steps they should be taking to stay healthy and working.

“This is a challenging time in our world, yet it’s also a period where we are seeing some of the best in human kindness, in teamwork, in ideas and innovation, and in safety,” said Darren Anstee, president of HSSEA for Wood’s Americas business.

“On behalf of everyone at Wood, I want to thank every single one of our people who continue to deliver our projects, our services and act responsibly and responsively to protect our people. I am inspired by many of the ideas and actions I see coming from teams across the Americas and thank you again for your commitment and care.”
