The UK Automotive Industry Booms Once More
Over the years, the UK automotive market has seen some serious rollercoaster activity. It went from being the leading force in manufacturing in the post war 1950s, only to be pushed to the side-lines during the 1960s as European countries such as Germany, France and Italy began to step up their skills.
However, that’s not the end of the story. At Fircroft, we’re beginning to see a revival of Team GB in the automotive industry and as a result, candidates from the UK and across Europe are flocking to get involved with British brands and we’re helping them do it.
Whilst we’re seeing automotive engineers from across Europe (Germany in particular) coming to the UK, we’ve also seen that candidates are actually crossing over from other sectors within the UK such as construction. Many of the skill sets required for these roles are transferable; in particular engineers with experience using CATIA V5 design packages and of course those with Aerospace experience. Our consultants can best advise engineers working within these sectors on how to make the move to automotive; steering them in the direction of the roles most relevant to their skill set.
Automotive jobs on the rise
There’s certainly room for candidates to cross over into automotive. Luxury car brands such as Rolls Royce and Bentley are going from strength to strength and reporting strong 2012 sales results and impressive growth for 2013. Jaguar Land Rover is also proving that UK car brands are becoming increasingly sought after, with a record growth in sales in China and £1.5 billion+ in profits last year.
As a result of these fantastic growth figures, we’re seeing a subsequent boom in automotive jobs. Jaguar Land Rover is likely to create 1,100 new jobs in addition to the new roles from earlier this year at its engine plant in the West Midlands.
The Government has also invested £400 million into making the UK the market leader for low carbon vehicles – another sign that as the manufacturers expand, so too will the need for automotive professionals. With thousands of job opportunities being created with high profile luxury brands and exciting new pioneering projects popping up daily, there has never been a better time to establish your career in the automotive industry.
