French oil major Total has teamed up with multinational information technology company Tata Consultancy Services to establish a digital innovation centre in India with the aim of exploring how digital technology can transform refining operations globally.

Based in Prune, in the State of Maharashtra, the centre will examine how the various building blocks of refining (production units, processes, the supply chain and petroleum product markets) can be improved through the intensive use of digital technology.
The establish of the digital innovation centre is part of Total's ambition to invent the Refinery 4.0
Total are pioneering digital transformation within the energy sector, making operations safer and more efficient, making better decisions faster, simplifying operators’ day-to-day work to enhance their efficiency, and reducing costs.

The industrial technology that Total will be exploring at the new digital innovation centre can be broken down into four key areas:

  • Connected, augmented operators: With the help of digital technology, such as mobile apps, drones and robots, Total can optimise the way operators work and improve their safety. Applications have been developed to digitise certain tasks, including field check reports, maintenance requests and the consolidation of team shift reports, and drones and robots are now used to carry out inspections in places that are difficult to access, such as at height or inside equipment.

  • Digital representation of Total’s plants: Virtual factories created using 3D imaging enable Total to access documentation or maintenance history at any time and to prepare maintenance operations. This data improves efficiency from the plant design stage to decommissioning.

  • Data analytics: Thanks to the analysis of data collected, notably by the numerous sensors installed throughout Total’s production sites (on pumps, turbines and compressors, for examples) Total can anticipate operating incidents before they occur. That means lower maintenance costs, greater equipment availability and a safer environment.

  • Collaboration environments: These smart rooms make it possible for production sites to remotely access the knowledge and skills of experts in various disciplines, such as maintenance, operations and the supply chain, thereby enhancing teams’ responsiveness in case of an unplanned event. In some cases, they also enable equipment to be controlled remotely and in real time.

  • Commenting on the establishment of the digital innovation centre, Bernard Pinatel, President of Total’s Refining & Chemicals division, said:

“With the digital innovation centre, we are positioning ourselves as a pioneer working to develop a smart, connected refinery that will allow us to improve our industrial competitiveness. We want to invent the Refinery 4.0.”
