Total invests in world leading supercomputer for improved oil exploration

With digitalisation of the Oil & Gas industry often talked about as an increasingly important factor, advances like Total’s new supercomputer demonstrate the investment that supermajors are putting into this sector.

The company’s new Pangea III supercomputer has been ranked the number 1 most powerful supercomputer in the industry, and the 11th most powerful computer globally, according to the TOP500 table.

According to Total, the Pangea III has increased its computing power to 31.7 petaflops (with 1 petaflop defined as a quadrillion floating point operations (flops) per second), and a storage capacity of 76 petabytes (with 1 petabyte being a million gigabytes of data).

To put that in to context, it’s roughly the processing power of 170,000 laptops combined, with a storage capacity capable of holding 50 million HD movies.

The question is, how is a supercomputer with these capabilities going to help Total find Oil & Gas prospects?

“We can do things much faster,” explained Kevin McLachlan, Total’s senior vice president for exploration. 

“We are developing advanced imaging algorithms to give us much better images of the sub-surface in these complex domains and Pangea III will let us do it 10 times faster than we could before."

According to McLaclan, 80% of the Pangea III’s time will be dedicated to seismic imaging, with the new algorithms capable of processing huge amounts of data more accurately and at a higher resolution.

“What used to take a week, now takes us a day to process.”

In a statement, the company listed three major applications for the supercomputer.

  • Exploration and development of seismic imaging
    According to McLaclan, 80% of the Pangea III’s time will be dedicated to seismic imaging, with the new algorithms capable of processing huge amounts of data more accurately and at a higher resolution, allowing them to more reliably locate hydrocarbons below ground. This will benefit complex geologic environments with resources trapped under salt, as encountered in Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, Angola and the Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Development and production models
    Increased computing power will allow Total to use innovative reservoir simulation methods that can be integrated more efficiently with a field’s production history, helping to generate more reliable predictive production models much faster.
  • Asset valuation and selectivity
    The ability to enable an early assessment of the value of exploration acreage and asset opportunities will allow Total to be more selective in their new ventures, contributing to business efficiency.

They further stress that Pangea III’s enhanced capabilities will extend to new applications such as molecular modelling to optimise refining processes or improve lubricants’ properties, and the testing of complex new algorithms and artificial intelligence solutions.

“Pangea III’s additional computing power enhances Total’s operational excellence. It enables Total to reduce geological risks in exploration and development, accelerate project maturation and delivery, and increases the value of our assets through optimized field operations, with all this at a lower cost,” stated Arnaud Breuillac, President Total Exploration & Production.
