Total has entered the floating offshore wind industry with an agreement to acquire 80% in the Erebus project located in the Celtic Sea, off the coast of Wales.

With a capacity of 96MW, the project is the world’s largest floating array and a significant contribution to keep the UK’s offshore wind market ahead of the rest of the world.

The deal was signed with Simply Blue Energy, who have been developing the project so far. The farm will be based around 45km from Pembrokeshire, in a water depth of 70m. It’s expected to be brought in to operation in 2025/26.

Floating wind farms remain a relatively new renewable energy technology, with the first full-scale floating wind turbine only having been deployed in 2009. The only current floating wind farm is Hywind, off the coast of Scotland, with a total capacity of 30MW. The Erebus project will deliver three times that.

“With its entry into floating offshore wind, Total confirms its ambition to contribute to the development of renewable energy worldwide. Floating offshore wind is an extremely promising and technical segment where Total brings its extensive expertise in offshore operations & maintenance. Total has the appropriate skills to meet the technological and financial requirements that determine the success of future floating offshore developments,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman & CEO of Total.
