At a cost of over $10 billion, the Cameron LNG liquefaction plant is one of the biggest LNG projects in the USA.

The start-up involves the first of three trains that will form Phase 1 of the project. Each train will have a capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with first production for trains 2 and 3 expected by the end of the year and mid-2020 respectively.

“The start-up of the LNG production marks an important milestone for the Cameron LNG project. This achievement is the result of work carried out by all of the teams and project partners. Total’s commitment to Cameron LNG and its expansion is in line with our strategy to continue building a strong position in the US LNG market. With Cameron LNG start-up, we will achieve our target of being integrated along the gas value chain in the US since we are already a gas producer in the country”, said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Total.

The project is operated by Cameron LNG LLC, which is jointly owned by Sempra Energy (50.2%), Total (16.6%), Mitsui & Co. Ltd (16.6%) and Misubishi/NYK (16.6%).

Additional construction at the facility will add two marine berths capable of accommodating Q-Flex sized LNG ships, a 160,000 cubic metre LNG storage tank (to be added to the 3 existing tanks), a compressor station, a 21-mile, 42” diameter pipeline and vaporisation capability for regasification services of 1.5 Bcf/d. It will also have the capacity to store and ship natural gas liquids (NGLs).

The project will begin LNG exports from the first train in the coming weeks.
