Total to drill at world record water depth

Total has awarded contracts for a three-well exploration drilling project offshore Angola and Namibia to Maersk Drilling. The campaign will include the deepest water depth ever drilled offshore.

The Maersk Voyager will be employed offshore for all three drilling projects. It is due to set the record in Angola’s Block 48 where it will drill to a water depth of 3,628.

The previous record is already held by Total and Maersk from 2016, when the Venturer drillship reached water depths of 3,400 metres in Uruguay’s Raya-1 well.

“We are thrilled to once again push beyond existing boundaries in collaboration with Total, drawing upon our mutual experience from the exciting deepwater exploration projects we have collaborated on over the years,” said Morten Kelstrup, COO of Maersk Drilling.

The three-well contract also includes Block 32 offshore Angola and another well offshore Namibia, plus two additional one-well options. Together the contracts are valued at approximately $46.3 million including a mobilisation fee.

The campaign is expected to start in January 2020 and last an estimated 240 days.
