Total have started up the third train of their Yamal LNG project a full year ahead of schedule and within the original budget.

The Yamal plant has already reached its full planned export capacity of 16.5 million tons per year, just one year after the first shipment was made in December 2017.

“We are proud of the successful launch of all three LNG trains of the Yamal LNG project less than a year after the start-up of the plant. This constitutes an unprecedented achievement for the industry” commented Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of Total.

Located off the Yamal Peninsula in northwest Siberia, Yamal is one of the biggest LNG projects in the world, with 4.6 billion barrels of oil equivalent in reserves being produced by the onsure South Tambey gas and condensate field. It includes an integrated gas treatment and liquefaction facility with three initial trains, each with 5.5 million tons per year capacity.

The project is operated by the Yamal LNG Company, owned by Russian independent gas producer Novatek (50.1%), Total (20%), CNPC (20%) and Silk Road Fund (9.9%).

The plant was not reach its full capacity until late 2019, but a ceremony with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was held on Tuesday to launch the third train and expand its output. The quick rise in export has raised questions about Yamal LNG’s ability to sell the additional volumes, but the firm claims it has pre-sold more than 96% of its LNG production under long-term contracts for the next 20 years.

The launch of the third train comes after the project shipped its 100th LNG cargo last week.

"The positive experience of Yamal LNG paves the way for further LNG developments alongside our strategic partner Novatek, including Arctic LNG 2, the next major development based on giant low costs resources in Russia’s far north,” said Pouyanné

The Arctic LNG 2 is listed as one of our pre-FID LNG projects to watch situated in Utrenneye a peninsula running parallel to Yamal.

Arctic LNG 2 will focus on exploiting the Utrenneye gas field which holds reserves of 10 trillion cubic metres of gas.

Project leaders Novatek have partnered with Total to construct and operate three trains which will produce a combined total of 19.8 mmpta at a total project cost of approximately $25.5 billion. Despite being situated in a particularly hostile environment the project is expected to be a success- largely due to Novatek’s demonstrated experience in the construction and operation of the Yamal LNG project.

A FID is expected in the second half of 2019.
