Toyota has announced plans to roll out more than 10 EVs worldwide by the early 2020s. The brand currently has no experience with launching EVs as all of their models are gas-fuelled, however they have committed to introducing the first EV into China and then gradually introducing the vehicles in Japan, India, the U.S and Europe.

The announcement comes as Toyota is faced with a rapidly changing industry. They have revealed that they will sell more than 10 battery powered models and electrified versions of every model in the Toyota and Lexus range by 2025. Their plan is to sell 5.5 million traditional gasoline-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, EVs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2030.

At a briefing in Tokyo, Executive Vice President, Shigeki Terashi said:

“As a mass-market automaker we need to expand our offering of electric cars,” he added, “Electrified vehicles, which are effective for economical consumption of fuel and promoting usage of alternative fuels, are indispensable in helping to solve current environmental issues, as a result, the number of models developed without an electrified version will be zero.”

Toyota has said it expects to sell 1 million EVs or fuel cell vehicles alone per year. The bold announcement marks a major departure for Japan’s biggest automaker, which has long favored its trademark gasoline-electric hybrid technology over purely battery-powered systems.
