The Oil and Gas Authority has launched what is thought to be one of the largest ever public data releases with the first Oil and Gas National Data Repository (NDR), which makes available 130 terabytes of well, geophysical, field and infrastructure data.
Freely available to anyone, it is hoped that the newly released data will promote investment in the UK Continental Shelf.

The dataset covers 12,500 offshore wellbores, 5,000 seismic surveys, and 3,000 pipelines over more than five decades. Freely available to anyone, it is hoped that the newly released data will help promote new investment, technology, and even exploration activity on the UK Continental Shelf.

There are an estimated 20 billion barrels of oil and gas remaining in the UK Continental Shelf and the UK Oil and Gas Authority hope that the NDR will play an important role in helping operators exploit these remaining reserves.

The NDR can be found here.

Commenting on the release, Nic Granger, Director of Corporate at the OGA said:

“The world is arguably entering a ‘fourth industrial revolution’, with data at its heart. The National Data Repository is a UK first and is an important milestone in our vision to enable open, transparent data. The platform makes data available for machine learning and artificial intelligence and offers the opportunity to uncover new prospects and previously overlooked plays”.
