The Pikes Peak hill climb is one of the world’s most renowned car races. Also known as The Race to the Clouds, it is an annual invitational automobile and motorcycle hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA every year on the last Sunday of June.

According to VW board member for development, Dr Frank Welsch. “It poses an enormous challenge and is therefore excellently suited to proving the capabilities of upcoming technologies.”

This year German auto giant Volkswagen will be entering the race with a lightweight custom racer – the I.D. R Pikes Peak.

It is a lightweight electric prototype built to race specifically at the mountain in Colorado with the goal of claiming the record for electric vehicles, which currently stands at 8m 57.118s.

The car weighs 1,100kg, including the driver, and VW says the vehicle is good for a 0-60 time of 2.25 seconds. That makes this car faster off the line than a Formula 1  or Formula E car — and just slightly faster than a Model S launching in Ludicrous mode.

It is 5200mm long, 2350mm wide and 1200mm high, with a wheelbase of 2850mm. It features double wishbone suspension. The chassis is built around the safety monocoque from a Norma sports prototype that Dumas has used to win Pikes Peak for the past three years, with VW developing a closed-cockpit sports prototype-style design. The lithium-ion batteries are mounted on the floor of the car, with a large rear wing and other aerodynamic parts designed to ensure maximum grip despite the high altitudes.

VW is gearing up to launch the ID range of electric road cars starting in 2019. Frank Welsch described the Pikes Peak event as a “real acid test” for VW’s electric programme.

“Customers have always benefited from the findings made in motorsport,” explains Mr Welsch. “We expect to take these findings and use them as a valuable impetus for the development of future I.D. models.

Keep an eye out on the 24th June when the race takes place, to see how the new I.D. R Pikes Peak tackles the notoriously tricky competition.
