The program will begin with the planting of 5,000 hectares of trees, primarily in Western Australia. The companies claim that this will offset approximately one million tonnes of CO2 over 25 years.

The partners will further assess the environmental and economic viability of a range of large-scale opportunities to create carbon offsets and improve biodiversity across the country.

Greening Australia have said that with their 37 years of experience in landscape restoration combined with Woodside’s capacity and knowledge in developing projects at scale will enable the partners to unlock barriers to a sustainable carbon market that will maximise benefits to the environment, communities and economy.

“Greening Australia has an ambitious target to restore 300,000 hectares of the Australian landscape as part of our 2030 vision and support the transition to a low carbon economy. Landscape-scale native tree planting projects are a proven way to achieve carbon sequestration, and our biodiversity focused and, science-led approach delivers a range of other positive benefits. We welcome the collaboration with Woodside for its potential to maximise nature-based solutions for the environment, community and economy as part of developing a sustainable carbon market,” Greening Australia CEO Brendan Foran said in a statement.

“We welcome the collaboration with Woodside for its potential to maximise nature-based solutions for the environment, community and economy as part of developing a sustainable carbon market. Building strong partnerships is vital to our work in tackling Australia’s biggest environmental challenges. We have a track record of working successfully with companies who like us, are solution-focused and ready to embrace new ways of working to create a sustainable future. Pro-active investments from large organizations like Woodside are crucial in taking us a step closer towards this goal and our mission of creating healthy and productive landscapes where people and nature thrive.”

Woodside are hoping that through partnerships and programs such as this, they will position the firm as a sustainable company in a lower-carbon future as they continue to grow.

“At Woodside we are working to reduce our emissions, investing in innovation and technology and building an offset portfolio which will also deliver value to regional Australia,” said Woodside CEO, Peter Coleman.

“Greening Australia and Woodside share aligned values and aspirations to identify opportunities on a sustainable basis to sequester carbon in the Australian landscape.”
