Yancoal Australia has received approval from the Queensland Government for an expansion of the Cameby Downs thermal coal mine.

The Cameby Downs mine will be expanded from a production capacity of 2.8 million tonnes per year for 45 years, to 3.5 million tonnes a year for 75 years

The planned expansion will allow the mine to increase its production by 25%, from a capacity of 2.8 million tonnes of run-of-mine (ROM) coal per year, to 3.5 million tonnes a year. It will also increase the production lifespan from 45 years to 75 years.

The new production target is expected to be achieved within the next year.

The open cut mine is operated by Syntech Resources, a subsidiary of Yanzhou Coal Mining Company, who also own shares in Yancoal Australia.

Based in Darling Downs, the facility includes a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) and related infrastructure.

Queensland Mines Minister Anthony Lynham called the expansion a “vote of confidence” in the state’s resources, adding:

“For Western Downs communities like Miles and Chinchilla, it means greater opportunities for the current and future generations of locals to benefit from a strong resources sector in their region.”

QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said:

“Coal currently delivers $43.4 billion or 13% of the state’s gross regional product and more than 215,000 or 9% of full-time equivalent jobs in Queensland.”
