Encompassing a huge range of different industries, there are loads of different career paths that fall under the bracket of engineering, each with their own disciplines, requirements and salary opportunities.

So with this year’s crop of engineering students about to graduate, and the next group awaiting results so they can weigh up their future options, it seems like a good time to talk about the all important numbers that might influence a few decisions on your career path. Specifically - how much do different engineering sectors pay?

This year’s survey undertaken by The Engineer in partnership with CBSButler showed that the average  salary for engineers in the UK came to £51,253 ($63,922) - an increase from the previous year’s figure of £47,896 ($59,735). This was taken from a survey of 1,568 engineers from 11 different sectors.

The report broke down the results by industry, showing that the highest average salary is made by engineers working in the Power, Nuclear & Renewables industry. The demand for more carbon-free energy has made this the top ranking industry for the first time ever, with engineers in this field averaging £58,695/year ($73,165), just above those working in Oil & Gas who average £57,167/year ($71,260).

The remaining salaries by industry are broken down as follows:
