Divers/helicopter pilots
$75,000 - 150,000

Essential to the procedures of an offshore platform, experienced divers and helicopter pilots are nearly always in demand thanks to the highly specialised and difficult nature of their jobs.

Transporting personnel and cargo to offshore platforms, assisting in geological surveying and providing emergency transportation services are all regular tasks for helicopter pilots within this industry - who need to be experienced and highly skilled to operate in adverse conditions with few visual clues and relatively small landing pads.

Divers, meanwhile, are involved with the maintenance of oil platforms and the building of underwater structures, with tasks including underwater welding, repair and cleaning of subsea installations, pipelines and structures.

Marine engineers
$70,000 - $155,000

Responsible for design and construction of fixed and floating marine structures, marine engineers have a wide remit that extends over the lifecycle of a project.

Marine engineers plan, design and construct all structures and equipment, as well as repairing and testing machinery and equipment for environmental, operational and performance factors.

Tanker captain
$75,000 - $170,000

Oil tankers are some of the largest vessels in the world, bringing thousands of gallons of oil and gas from offshore platforms to port facilities. Captaining them requires plotting the safest, most direct and most efficient routes, and maneuvering the vessel through all conditions. They must also supervise cargo unloading at the port.

The captain is responsible for the management and safety of the vessel, the crew and the cargo, making this a high-profile and lucrative job.

Workover or completion staff
$56,000 - $181,000

Workover or completion staff are responsible for preparing wells for production and fixing any problems with active wells, according to design standards and specifications. They must analyse completion or workover performance and recommend equipment or procedural changes that will help troubleshoot operational or technical issues.

Geologists

$65,000 - $183,000

As the oil and gas industry increasingly moves to unconventional plays, geologists and geophysicists have a more difficult and vital role.

Geologists conduct seismic surveys and analyse data to locate new deposits and assess any geological risks associated. The job requires knowledge of the best uses of new technology and techniques to build geological models and plan the development of exploration wells.

Reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, subsea engineers and chemical process engineers are all offshore jobs requiring highly skilled, experienced professionals

Reservoir engineers/drilling engineers
$73,000 - $184,000

Reservoir and drilling engineers use data delivered by geologists to determine the distribution of oil and gas reserves in the reservoir and develop economically viable plans to extract them.

The job involves creating simulation models to predict the flow of fluid through rocks and planning, developing and overseeing drilling operations. The job begins at the design stage, and continues through the lifecycle of the well to completion and abandonment.

Subsea/chemical process engineers
$75,000 - $188,000

Subsea & chemical process engineers have the most challenging - and well paid - jobs on an offshore platform.

Subsea engineers design and install equipment, tools and infrastructure used for administering the installation of wellheads on the seabed and the pipelines that connect them to the platform.

Process engineers design, construct, maintain and improve facilities and equipment while also conducting risk assessments for process operations.

High level offshore jobs for experienced staff can bring in over 6 figure salaries

Production/maintenance supervisor
$108,000 - $239,000

Production and maintenance supervisors oversee production operations to ensure that mechanical and electric equipment functions efficiently to meet production targets. They also manage the activities of production and maintenance technicians.

They coordinate with engineers, offshore installation managers and onshore engineers to solve production and maintenance issues.

Offshore installation managers
$174000 - $247,000

Offshore installation managers are responsible for the health, safety and wellbeing of the workers on a platform, while also ensuring that production is being performed as planned, and is adhering to rules and regulations.

OIMs oversee the work and training of all platform personnel. They are trained to handle emergencies and must ensure the timely maintenance and repair of equipment.

Offshore drilling consultant
$143,000 - $305,000

Drilling consultants have the most lucrative position on an offshore platform, taking charge of the daily operations of the rig and advising on any issues.

The role can involve well design, drilling supervision, drilling operations, contractor management and contract awarding, supply chain managing, delivery planning, cost estimations, and coordinating with rig crews to make sure operations are performed efficiently and safely. Drilling consultants are also responsible for ordering new supplies and equipment, and maintaining the required number of workers on the platform at any one time.

Offshore drilling consultants usually have at least 10 years of experience, as well as an engineering-based degree in petroleum engineering, drilling, geology, mechanical engineering or nuclear engineering (depending on the project).
