The Position

Through an internal promotion and being involved in some of Queensland's leading projects over the next 18-36 months, this company is looking to recruit a Principal Mechanical Engineer - Mining & Minerals. This Principal Engineer will provide guidance and governance to the Brisbane Mechanical - Mining & Minerals team.

The Basic Functions of the role are as follows:

  • Accountable for the quality of deliverables of the discipline design section in line with the needs of the customer and regulatory authorities
  • Responsible for production and/or review of engineering deliverables including models, drawings, calculations, specifications, reports and evaluations
  • Develop man-hour estimates and provide input into proposals and provide input to capital estimates including quantity calculations.
  • Allocate tasks and assist other engineers to balance demands of time and budget, acting as the link between project teams and the mechanical discipline group
  • Set man-hour budgets for engineering and drafting and recommend engagement of additional manning as required and monitor the progress and performance of project discipline teams, providing feedback and support where necessary.
  • Oversee design scope changes and provide solutions to engineering problems
  • Provide feedback to the Project Engineering Manager on design progress budget and schedule, review and approve vendor data
  • Provide technical support to the onsite construction teams, projects department and estimating department
  • Analyse feedback from fabricators and construction personnel to improve performance, provide technical and commercial direction to engineers in relation to design quality, design schedules and design budgets
  • Advise Management of the requirements for overhead expenditure within discipline area, work to identify / manage continuous improvement activities within the department including the maintenance of company standards and procedures.
  • Assist engineering management to assess the suitability of staff and identify the key resources for specific projects/studies and drive professional development of direct reports
  • Ability to coach and mentor less experienced engineers through empowerment
  • Participate in professional development activities through the relevant engineering institute

The Candidate

As this position is a Principal Mechanical Engineer role within the Mining & Minerals team, experience within this space is required. EPCM experience is also a vital part of this position. Please see below for other basic skills/Qualifications.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, with at least 15 years mechanical design experience in the mining and minerals processing industry
  • Member of (or eligibility for membership) of the Institution of Engineers Australia
  • Existing RPEQ registration and Chartered Engineer qualification preferred (or working toward this qualification)
  • Recent relevant experience in a leading Mechanical Engineering capacity, able to work across concept, development, front end engineering and detailed design
  • Experienced in B engineering and/or plant construction, commissioning and operational environments
  • Effective team leadership and general management skills with the ability to delegate effectively
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to problem-solve effectively, with strong analytical, literacy and numerical skills
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to all aspects of safety
  • Understanding of Australian and common International standards and regulatory authority requirements in the mining and minerals processing sector
