The Role:
Purpose:
Legal Counsel for the Retail division:
- review proposed new business relationships and products to identify, assess and manage legal and contractual risks to the business;
- advise on the negotiation of legal provisions in documents to facilitate a risk mitigated approach to business development;
- identify legal matters generally affecting the Retail division and organisation in order to report key issues for resolution.

Key Accountabilities:
The post holder is responsible for the provision of competent and timely legal advice to ensure Retail delivers for the Group strategy in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The successful candidate(s) will provide legal support to the business to review, negotiate and execute contracts which will range in value, complexity and strategic importance to the Retail Division. S/he will therefore interface with internal commercial stakeholders and other counsels within Retail, and occasionally with Legal team members from organisation.

The post holder will:
* pro-actively identify areas where they can add value by strengthening knowledge or procedure for the Legal team or the Retail division;
* understand Group objectives, priorities and values and support alignment of Retail's performance with those;
* report material legal and contractual risks to the Senior Counsel for Retail;
* understand and support implementation of Legal's and contract review and storage repository policies in order to ensure Retail's compliance with the same;
* deliver training to commercial colleagues.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
The post holder will have relevant legal professional qualifications and experience working in a corporate/commercial environment. Specific requirements are:
* solicitor/barrister qualified in a UK jurisdiction;
* excellent analytical observations and strong technical drafting skills;
* ability to work under pressure with limited supervision in a multi-disciplinary environment;
* a pragmatic approach and an ability to assess and quantify commercial risk;
* collaborative approach to build strong working relationships with colleagues;
* effective written and oral communication skills to contribute towards Retail working across different geographical locations;
* flexible and willing to take on work in new or unfamiliar practice areas.
