The Role:
Location: Toledo, Ohio
Contract: 6 months

This is a backfill for open USW positions when needed to help with the reorganization effort. Preform routine testing on the ICPMS. Support various projects ongoing in the lab. IC commissioning - HPLC commissioning


Samples are measured to the part per billion for a variety of elements including Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Ba, Pd, and As. Lower limits range from

10ppb to 250ppb depending on the properties and interferences of the element. Commonly measured samples include BGOT Feed, BGOT Product, Crude 1 Vac 1 HGO, Isocracker 1st stage

feed, FCC Feed, Naphtha Treater Feed, Coker, and Decanted Oil.

Hazards: Fire - Test materials are flammable; avoid open flames.

Vapors and fumes - use hood ventilation. Glass cuts/scrapes - use laboratory gloves. All samples potentially contain H2S.

To determine the metals concentration of organic samples using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy.


When performing elemental analysis, a sample is diluted 1:10 with premisolv spiked with Internal Standard. A calibration curve is run at the beginning of each batch and a check standard is analyzed periodically throughout the run. Samples are introduced to the ICP-MS by first being pumped through a Nebulizer which converts the liquid to a mist of small particles. It goes into the Spray Chamber which allows only the smallest particles to go on to the Connector Tube and the Plasma Torch. The Plasma torch breaks compounds down into individual atoms which are then ionized. These Ions travel to the Mass Spectrometer via the Sampler Cone and the Skimmer Cone and are focused by Extraction Lens-Omega Lens assembly. The Ions then move through a Quadropole which separates the Ions by mass. The Quadropole can be filled with either Hydrogen or Helium gas. Interference is lowered by the reactions and collisions with the two gasses. The gasses can also react with desired ions so discretion must be used when deciding which data to use for each element. The remaining Ions go through an Electron Multiplier which increases the signal that each Ion produces before it is measured.
