The Role:
Job Title: Senior Legal and Compliance Counsel
1. Role Objective:
To ensure that Company operates within the law; to provide legal advice and counsel; to manage commercial transactions (draft, negotiate and amend contracts); to act as a business partner to internal clients; to anticipate and manage legal risks; and to mitigate the potential for claims and litigation.
2. Roles and Responsibilities:
* Provide direct and unsupervised legal advice to the various departments as agreed with the General Counsel
* Act as Legal Lead on the company's projects (e.g., long-term commercial agreements, other business alliances)
* Analyze and advise on legal rights, laws, statues, tax matters and regulations. Maintain up to date knowledge of all regulatory requirements impacting the business
* Prepare, negotiate and review various legal documents such as contracts, licenses, leases, sales, purchases, real estate, etc.
* Examine legal information to find out the advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuit
* Assist with the development of legal policies and procedures to support the business.
* Assist in the development and review of preventative law strategies and corporate policies/procedures to ensure compliance with both Company and local and international legal requirements.
* Assist in the development and maintenance of minimum contracting standards for all activities of Company in order to ensure compliance and consistency across the organization.
* Review, and as necessary submit to General Counsel for endorsement, any deviations from company standard contractual language.
* Assist with the development of commercial and operational risk management strategies.
* Advise on matters related to Company as required.
* Assist in enforcing business ethics and compliance.
* Assist in training of legal matters.
* Advise on shipping related matters (charter party, vetting services, etc.) and shipping related claims
HSSE / RC14001 Management
* Comply with all health, safety and environmental & security standards and procedures of Company.
* Support all the initiatives on health, safety, security and environment issues and works to solve problems and make continuous improvements to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
Behavioral Skills, Knowledge and Experience
(Competencies, knowledge and experience needed for the satisfactory performance of the job)
1. Educational Qualifications:
* University degree in Law (BA/LLB/JD), from an accredited university; and
* Licensed to practice law in at least one jurisdiction
2. Experience:
* Minimum 12 years of post-qualification legal practice (either private or in-house) preferably with marketing of chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas products.
* Other relevant experience in shipping such as time charter party agreements, company secretarial and operational matters, regulatory matters including trade laws and sanctions, competition law and antitrust experience, project financing.
* Knowledge of International competition and anti-trust laws
* Preferably some knowledge of local Qatari laws
* Demonstrated capability to function well in multicultural situations involving customers, suppliers and colleagues.
