The Role:
JOB TITLE: Senior Development Management Officer
DIVISION: Planning
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must Have
Knowledge & Experience
For Grade BG10 - Graduate in a relevant Planning subject providing eligibility to become a Chartered Member of the RTPI.
Have a good knowledge of Planning legislation and processes relating to Development Management
Be able to handle a mixed workload, with a mix of applications, with a bias towards complex and major applications.
For Grade BG11 -
-Be a Chartered Member of the RTPI.
-Have a good knowledge of Planning legislation and processes relating to Development Management
Be able to handle a workload of consistently complex major applications.

Abilities & Aptitudes

Good oral and written skills
Ability to work to deadlines and be able to meet or exceed stringent workload processing times
Ability to understand and interpret complex information - either in the form of plans or data
Ability to understand the needs of the service from the viewpoint of customers (both internal and external)
Ability to use a variety of Information Technology tools to deliver the service
A commitment to provide a consistent customer focused service, balancing competing customer demands
Experience in the following areas:
1. Handling and processing a caseload of mid-range to complex planning applications
2. Writing reports on planning and related applications
3. Preparing statements for planning appeals at written representation, hearing and public inquiry level, and appearing as a planning witness at appeal hearings and inquiries.
4. Providing advice to customers at all levels


Able to demonstrate knowledge and/or experience of equalities and diversity issues in accordance with Bristol City Council's 'Equalities Policy - Equal Opportunities & Anti-Harassment'.
To be able to progress from BG10 to BG11, the post holder must be a Chartered Member of the RTPI, have achieved a level of "Great" in the performance against objectives section of My Performance at the post holder's most recent annual review, and be able to demonstrate that that have the competency to be able to handle a workload of consistently complex major applications.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS - Could Have

Knowledge & Experience

Experience of representing the Council at public meetings and committees, as well as appearing as an expert witness at appeals
Familiarity and commitment to the core values of the City Council

Abilities & Aptitudes

Understanding of the sustainable development agenda and its implications for the delivery of the Planning service
Awareness of issues affecting complex urban environments
