The Role:
Support STEP related activities in the Materials Technology Laboratory (MTL), this is full time and is based at Culham Science Centre.

2 different positions on offer:

1. Materials Gap Analysis
The future design of STEP demands a thorough review of available materials, and their feasibility for use within a fusion reactor. Gaps in our materials knowledge must be identified. The candidate will be required to carry out a thorough review of existing literature; including papers, reports, presentations as well as information available through external organisations. The culmination of this work will include a technical report outlining suitable materials - divided across component areas. Within this report, areas of future material research (including experimental and modelling-based approaches) will be identified and recommended to STEP management.

2. Reviewing codes and standards for materials qualification
The candidate is required to carry out paper-based research in support of materials for STEP. A significant proportion of this time is expected to be allocated to a review of the RCC-MRX regulatory codes, specifically aspects pertaining to material qualification. In addition to this, a review of the relevant codes and standards already established for digital image correlation (DIC) will be undertaken (i.e. ISO, ASTM). This will involve interfacing with external project partners in both industry and academia to better understand standardisation issues in greater detail. Literature reviews may be required on occasion, where detailed research into a specific materials subject area may be necessary as part of the MTL contribution to STEP.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Role 1
* Metallurgy & material science background.
* Excellent written skills including disseminating highly technical data to a large audience
* Communicating clearly with a range of stakeholders across the organisation and externally as required.

Role 2
* Understanding of material deformation and related processes.
* Capability of writing detailed technical reports and strategy documents.
* Communicating clearly with a range of stakeholders across the organisation and externally as required.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
* Previous experience in a nuclear related sector.
* Demonstrable experience of preparing literature reviews.
* Background in fusion or fission energy.
* Understanding of DIC.
* Familiarity with design codes - particularly nuclear regulatory and the RCC-M/Rx codes.
