The Role:
An opportunity has become available for a Superintendent of Geotechnical Services to join the team with a leading mining company based in Illawarra/Wollongong. Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, the role will provide governance, long term geotechnical designs and improvements to allow Operations to achieve safe, productive and efficient production. You will also provide internal consultancy to Planning, Mining Operations and Projects.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Champion the company operating model, Values, Code of Conduct and Care Strategy.
  • Provide leadership to the Geotechnical function within the Mine Services Technical Services team.
  • Ensure geological / geotechnical risks (safety and production) for current and proposed domains are analysed, understood and communicated to key stakeholders.
  • Provide governance to ensure Strata Failure Management Plan is complied with, and good strata control practice is followed in design, implementation and monitoring.
  • Provide long term ground support and pillar designs to ensure safe and cost-effective production. Review site designs as required.
  • Act as internal consultant, providing expert geotechnical advice to operations, management, Technical Services and Support Services team functions and Projects teams as required.
  • Design and maintain controls for the Material Risk of Strata Failure.
  • Identify innovation opportunities and undertake investigations and research to enable their development. Project manage implementation where appropriate.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering (strong preference for a Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering discipline or similar).
  • Significant exposure to effectively leading and developing a team of technical professionals, whilst undertaking detailed technical work in an operational coal mine.
  • Experience in strata control management in an underground coal mine (either as on-site Geotechnical Engineer or external consultant) along with the design of ground support for underground coal mines and the design of coal mine pillars would be highly beneficial.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and influence around technical risk and designs and geotechnical risk and controls across various levels of the business.
  • A strong communicator with the ability to lead, develop and mentor other team members.
