Emission Certification & Compliance Project Engineer

As a Certification & Compliance Project Engineer you will work in a OEM new product development environment that develops On Road and Off-Road Vehicles from concept to launch. One of the key deliverables of this position is obtaining certification approvals from government staff (for example the U.S. EPA, or the California Air Resources Board), and Emissions new WLTP in Europe. You will interact with cross functional teams to ensure our products meet all applicable emissions and fuel economy regulations.

Country regulations regarding homologation and certification; emissions regulations; government affairs regarding regulation changes; competitor activity; any legal restrictions versus predecessor's vehicles; working with partners and contractors internationally - specifically but not limited to Europe, America and Middle East.

Data and documentation management; regulatory and emissions management; quality, safety management; a close working relationship with the Engineering, Production, and Commercial teams.

Accountabilities of the job
Develop and deliver an effective and efficient Homologation and regulatory process focused on Emissions and Exhaust
Management of coordinating and advising on changes or notices regarding government regulatory changes
Provide guidance and information on emission regulations and amendments to the business including Engineering, Quality and Commercial
Work with vehicle program teams to provide emissions regulatory guidance and where necessary address emissions issues
Define vehicle emissions test groups in support of U.S. & California Certification and EU WLTP Homologation
Manage testing of vehicle programs to address government emissions compliance requirements
Prepare and submit data addressing emissions and fuel economy requirements to U.S. EPA and the California Air Resources Board.
Prepare, submit, and maintain the government applications for certification.
Ensure compliance with applicable EPA & CARB emissions regulations, FE regulations and other application reporting requirements.
Act as liaison between company and government agencies on emissions certification and FE matters
Support the development and maintenance of internal policies and processes related to the application, implementation, enforcement and audit of all policies, standards and regulations
Work with external agencies and government regulatory authorities to ensure compliance of products in the respective markets where the products will be sold
Prepare, review and submit type regulatory approval documents and drawings to applicable regulatory bodies
Advise the Engineering team on current and future legislative matters relating to automotive design, manufacture and functionality for respective markets relating to emission and exhaust
Monitor on going adherence of overall vehicle compliance to regulatory requirements and report to Engineering Manager non-conforming regulatory issues
Work as an active member of the Engineering team, ensure effective communication between colleagues and positive contribute to meetings and briefings

Required profile:
Level of education & Experience in general: The incumbent will have significant experience in automotive Emissions Certification & Compliance / legislation environment with a manufacturing, OEM or first tier 1 supplier; will be able to demonstrate direct knowledge of automotive design and engineering process, from concept to industrialisation;
Minimum 6 years automotive experience in similar role
Engineering Degree or similar
Compliance Engineering Certification or equivalent
Knowledge of the European WLTP legislation and USA EPA regulations

Technical skills:
Extensive experience with emissions/fuel economy regulations and testing/procedures
Demonstrated experience working with various government bodies is required
Knowledge of vehicle emissions control systems, engine calibrations, and powertrains
Able to develop and maintain the respect and trust of government agency employees
Research regulatory requirements and effectively negotiate as needed
Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills
Strong time management, planning, integrity, and teambuilding skills
Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 10% of the time)

Behavioural skills: Must be able to build effective working relationships with internal clients and external partners and suppliers; strong problem-solving skills; Influencing and challenging skills (both for internal & external use); Solid ability to move from analytical to strategy (bigger picture); apply knowledge to critically assess situation; must be a good communicator and able to build sustainable relationships internally and externally with multi-disciplinary teams i.e. Engineering, Sales and Marketing, Regulatory bodies.
