The Role:


Knowledge and practical experience of composite materials and processing are highly desired, particularly around glass and carbon fibre epoxy composites, sandwich structures and out-of-autoclave processing methods. Knowledge of sensor technologies and NDT, data processing and modelling would be beneficial.

Accountabilities

Accountable to the Senior Materials Research Engineer for all technical aspects of the role:

* Ability to work under guidance but be a self-starter on both technical and administration aspects of the role.
* Ability to create novel concepts and solutions for technical problems.
* Personable and confident dealing with both external customers and internal personnel within the business.
* Ability to support projects to ensure on-time delivery for both public and private funders
* Manufacture of composites, manufacture of adhesive bonded test specimens
* Use FTIR, 3D optical microscope, ultrasonic thickness and other materials test and analysis equipment

Key Responsibilities

* Support the creation of public and privately funded research proposals on wind blade materials
* Delivery of tasks and work packages in commercially and publicly funded projects
* Support meetings with internal and external customers using technical knowledge and perform initial evaluation of project proposals
* Disseminate project outputs and research at academic and industry conferences and through publication of articles
* Support the R&DI team on composite manufacture, material property test methods and materials analysis techniques
* Support company business initiatives
* Write technical project and materials test reports
* Develop materials test programs

Authority & Decisions

Ability to work under light supervision, seeking authority on critical technical issues
Skills & Knowledge

* Relevant degree or equivalent in a suitable engineering/material science discipline;
* Knowledge of composite materials including manufacturing techniques, repair methods and failure modes is required
* Knowledge of adhesives chemistry, properties, application and test methods is highly desirable
* Knowledge of sensor technologies and NDT methods is highly desirable
* Highly computer literate - ability to use Microsoft packages, the ideal candidate would also have some capability in data processing and modelling
* Good oral and written communication skills - must be capable of writing detailed technical reports;
* Highly innovative and a good problem solver
* Good team player;
* Good presentation skills;
* Capable of working within tight timescales and budgets;
* Ability to deal with customer expectations and aspirations on project delivery:
* Some knowledge of international materials standardisation

Qualifications & Experience

* Educated to at least degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
* Evidence of problem solving capability
* Motivated and strong team player - working individually and supporting the Blades Research Team
* Excellent interpersonal skills.

Key Capabilities

* Knowledge of Composite materials and (Out of autoclave) processing techniques.
* A positive and flexible approach to work activities including travel to external meetings, test facilities etc outside of normal working hours.
