Summary:
NES Fircroft have been exclusively engaged to conduct a national search for an experienced technical director to oversee the software, hardware, systems, safety and ILS engineering of above surface naval systems on behalf of an international defence contractor. Specifically, you will be overseeing the arm of the business responsible for providing critical systems for surface vessels, customer support & related services, engineering & integration services for combat systems, and through-life support services for naval platforms.
Structure:
As the above surface naval systems Technical Director, you will be reporting directly to the Vice President responsible for the mentioned business unit. You will lead and manage the multidisciplinary engineering support functions across the domain, with 7 technical/engineering managers reporting directly to yourself. Each of these managers is responsible for 10-15 technical professionals, resulting in overall accountability for approximately 100 technical professionals working across Radars, Sensors, Surveillance, Combat Management Systems, and Electronic Warfare Systems.
Key Outcomes and Accountability:
Stakeholders and People Management
- Developing and sustaining good working relationships with multiple stakeholders, partners and sub-contractors.
- Representing the business unit to the company's Australian Engineering Board, the Maritime Engineering Leadership Team, and the Global Business Unit Engineering Board.
- Actively promote and foster a culture of co-engineering, collaboration and communication across the wider naval engineering community.
- Lead, manage, motivate and develop a team of multidisciplinary technical leads through both coaching and empowerment.
Performance and Delivery
- Monitor the effectiveness of engineering outcomes to meet contractual quality, budget, availability, time and reliability targets.
- Either perform or oversee audits and peer reviews of problems as they are required and to ensure timely execution of any corrective measures.
- Financial management of the business unit's budget.
Technical Advice
- Oversee and facilitate the management, planning, and allocation of engineering resources to projects in line with workload forecasting.
- Ensure that the appropriate engineering resources, skills and capabilities are available to support both current and future demand through efficient professional development and skillset management.
- Perform the functions of an Engineering Authority, Design Authority and Safety Authority for the business unit.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in IT or Engineering discipline
- Substantial management experience delivering large and complex bids, projects and contracts
- Experience managing defence engineering teams, specifically with naval platform experience
- Excellent leadership capabilities with advanced communication and interpersonal skills
- Australian Defence Security Clearance
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
