The Role

To lead the development with theoretical and practical capabilities to define, review and prove out design options.
To lead planning and execution of development and test activities with internal and external partners
To lead change management, detail and release of components and systems in accordance with the technical, cost, quality and delivery targets in line with the Company's product plan.

Main Responsibilities

Developing and maintaining technical knowledge/capability.
a. Self education through evaluation of competitor vehicles, technical literature, maintaining of a network of contacts within the industry and educational establishments.
b. Developing and maintaining sufficient understanding of the mechanical systems/components.

Accountable for defining and planning own work for approval by Functional Manager.
a. Lead development of potential feature definition in line with project specified functionality, legal, cost, weight and timing requirements.
b. Develop activity timing planning for assigned features, identifying all relevant activities and their customers/suppliers (internal and external) and obtaining their agreement/buy-in
c. Lead outsourced supplier engineering activities to deliver the above requirements

Accountable for design of components/systems which, when introduced into production, are safe, legal and otherwise fit for purpose.
a. Identify and analyse alternative design solutions to satisfy functional, technical, legal and styling specifications, in line with engineering strategies, initially from existing supplier capability, but if necessary through initiating/conducting original design/development.
b. Through consultation/agreement with the Functional Manager and cross-functional teams, select appropriate solutions.
c. Design, release, sourcing prototypes and pre-production parts of the overall system to integrate with programme requirements to satisfy agreed targets.
d. Collaborates closely with suppliers and other engineers/senior engineers, particularly those who are dependent upon their control devices to operate their components/systems.
e. Plan and manage test and vehicle preparation with workshop documentation and build information providing support where appropriate

Accountable for timely parts release for prototypes and production. Timely delivery of all product engineering activities to support on-time vehicle launch to quality and cost.
a. Responsible for the release of engineering CAD & drawings. Generation and maintenance of business & engineering documentation
b. Working with CAD designers to ensure timely and accurate release of engineering information such as CAD data, drawings, build instructions (PDM) and Bills-of-Material (BoM).
c. Liaison with BoM, CAD administration and change management teams to ensure release on schedule.
d. Establishing and managing data release schedules.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

* Experience working as a project engineer in the automotive industry
* Excellent project management experience
* Excellent problem solving & evaluation techniques
* Excellent interpersonal skills and computer literate using MS office tools including MS Project.
* Excellent communication verbal and written skills
* Experience of Powertrain Systems, development and validation activities
* Catia V5 CAD design skills desirable but not essential

PRACTICAL & TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

* Experience of development of exhaust emissions components, exhaust acoustic development, interpretation of finite element analysis for mechanical and thermal stress and CFD analysis.
* Experience of validation testing of powertrain systems components
* Experience of leading DFMEA analysis
* Working knowledge in the use of automotive diagnostic software
* Experience of metal and Plastic forming techniques with experience of design for manufacture requirements.
* Experience of development of other powertrain systems components desirable

QUALIFICATIONS

* Appropriate Masters Engineering Degree or Engineering Degree with 5 years relevant project and work experience. Less qualified candidates with significant relevant industrial experience will also be considered.
* Full UK driving license.
