Responsible for delivering whole vehicle aerodynamic performance utilising knowledge, wind tunnel testing & CFD simulations. The candidate will be responsible for meshing vehicle geometries, setting up & running CFD cases & data analysis & reporting.

The candidate will need to apply aerodynamic expertise to design & development testing (scale model, Aerobuck & whole vehicle) in aerodynamic test facilities.

The role is test biased & the ideal candidate will be able to plan & conduct wind tunnel tests to develop vehicles & meet performance targets. This will involve liaising with styling & engineering in order to achieve signoff.

The Role:
1. Support & Design Development

  • Use & development of test procedures & measurement techniques & technologies
  • Data acquisition & processing, archive, data management
  • Data analysis & ability to write technical summary report to identify status, conclusions, concerns & recommendations
  • Engineering test & validation planning, status release & sign off for systems & components
  • Design & develop aerodynamic parts & systems specifications
  • Generate aerodynamic design guidelines. Engineering change management (PDB, Aeko, etc.)
  • Ability to capture design requirements & specify, for consistent attribute performance (e.g. design for manufacturing fit & function)
  • Ability to write & present status documents suitable for audience up to EG, E-Circle or similar
  • Challenge & influencing design
  • Competitor benchmarking (including technologies used) & target setting
  • Plan, prioritise & manage project-related activities throughout complete project development
  • Cross functional working with other areas of the business
  • Design & Concept reviews for achieving project deliverables
  • Influence selection & liaison with relevant suppliers for progressing projects (outsourcing, material purchase, design & development etc.) - can define RFQ & manage outsource work
  • Understanding of financial consequences & working within financial constraints of their development role in the organisation (proposing & leading more effective use of agreed budget to deliver incremental &/or better aerodynamic value/performance & support of Manager in budget definition)
  • Cross-functional alignment for achieving financial objectives of parts/systems including value-engineering (proposing & leading more effective use of agreed budget to deliver X-business optimised design)
  • Knowledge & understanding of value engineering (performance/cost/weight)
  • Reporting of project status for area of responsibility in cross functional & project teams
  • Status & Risk Management- identify, escalate & propose resolution
  • Definition of detailed project activities & budget requirements
  • Deliver Engineering systems & components to meet the requirements of the Project Description Brochure

2. Problem Solving

  • Collect, manage & analyse data to produce reports as appropriate & progress design guidelines
  • Solve & manage administrative, organisational, logistical problems at work
  • Analysis & management of multiple design related issues to identify the root cause.
  • Solve complex engineering & design related problems
  • Design of Experiment - ability to identify variables, define, execute & modify to achieve & maximise output, time & cost requirements

3. Developing & Maintaining Knowledge

  • Keeping up-to-date with technologies
  • Development & use of tools for aerodynamic development by relevant Simulation Engineering (CFD)
  • Liaison & development of working relationship with group partners - establish & maintain working relationships

Essential Skills / Qualifications:

  • Mechanical or Aeronautical / Aerospace Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Masters in CFD or Aerodynamics related discipline desirable
  • Membership of relevant professional intuition & Chartered Engineer status preferable
  • Experience of vehicle wind tunnel testing & development
  • Experience using CFD methods
  • Good knowledge of CATIA, ANSA & EXA PowerFlow
  • Knowledge of Vehicle Drag Optimisation
  • Ability to communicate at various levels
