The Role

The Whole Vehicle Analysis Engineer defines the appropriate reliability testing portfolio to be undertaken on pre-series vehicles during the launch phase of new projects, addresses functional issues reported during the reliability testing by carrying out initial analysis and assigning the issues to problem owners within the business for resolution. The Whole Vehicle Analysis Engineer also performs expert evaluation of pre-series vehicles and systems in preparation or Quality lead drive events up to Board level.

Main Responsibilities

1. Defining release criteria
- Define vehicle reliability performance criteria, focused on typical customer usage and aligned to product performance standards, to enable release of new products and features for series production
- Establish and monitor typical vehicle driving profiles and performance requirements of Bentley customers by market and model.
- Investigate and understand issues that cause warranty claims and dissatisfaction with the brand
- Specify specific reliability tests to determine the performance of features
- Define the standard station driver profiles to cover the different vehicle operating scenarios applicable to module
- Compile and keep up to date the release criteria catalogue applicable to module
- Keep up to date with new technical product developments applicable to module and develop reliability performance criteria appropriately
- Consult with Quality Module Representatives to understand key project launch issues relating to whole vehicle reliability
- Ensure Whole Vehicle reliability plans incorporate all required release criteria applicable to the module

2. Analysis of Whole Vehicle Reliability issues and raising of issues
- Review and analyse Whole Vehicle reliability concerns raised and reported in the Quality concern management system by stations based in the UK and worldwide
- Ensure all relevant data is available (photos/logs etc.) to enable detailed analysis of reported concerns
- If required, instruct the stations to undertake specific actions and/or provide specific data to aid understanding of the problem, thus enabling clear and accurate problem descriptions
- Review and agree the severity issues raised in reliability against a rating standard
- Analyse reliability issues in detail to determine probable root cause
- Compile precise problem definitions of the issues reported enabling clear understanding of the issues across the business up to and including Board member level
- Based on the initial analysis and severity of the issue, decide if further analysis and corrective measures are necessary

3. Expert assessment of vehicle
- Inspect and functionally evaluate reliability vehicle features and systems under static conditions appropriate to area of functional responsibility
- Perform expert customer focussed dynamic evaluations of reliability vehicles and systems prior to commencing reliability testing and at intervals during the reliability programs
- Participate in Quality and other department led customer focused vehicle assessment drives
- Raise issues found during assessments

4. Verification of solutions
- Initiate, co-ordinate and ensure the introduction of hardware and software updates on to reliability vehicles to enable verification of technical countermeasures to raised concerns
- Define and initialise special test procedures to be undertaken on reliability vehicles by reliability stations to enable the verification of issues where appropriate

5. Release events
- Participate in preparation drives and raising of issues found in a timely manner
- Lead and liaise with Engineering representatives throughout preparation

6. Process Improvements
- Actively support process development activities appropriate to role
- Identify and highlight process related problems in own area of work

Skills & Experience

- Strong whole vehicle assessment skills
- Strong influencing skills
- Strong technical communication skills both written and verbal
- Strong technical and analytical problem solving skills
- Good PC skills (MS Office)
- Good reporting and presenting skills
- Good team working skills
- German language skills preferable

Practical & Technical Knowledge

- Capable of understanding the construction, function and operation of vehicle parts and systems using technical information provided by Engineering (technical drawings and specifications, system function descriptions etc.)
- Capable of analysing of technical faults on vehicle parts and systems applicable to module
- Capable of determining appropriate reliability testing criteria based on system performance specifications and real customer usage profiles


- Minimum HNC or equivalent, preferably degree level in relevant technical discipline.
