The Role:
The Role - Advanced Manufacturing Engineer
As Advanced Manufacturing Engineer you will report to the Mechanical Design (or Power Electronics) Development Team Manager within the Valves Department. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the development of new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming "HVDC Grid". This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Valves are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach.
The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be some international travel opportunities to collaborate with other R&D Centres, test laboratories and strategic suppliers.
The role is focus on the industrialisation of the validated design by interacting with the stakeholders, like, Sourcing department, Supply chain and Manufacturing, broken down as below:

Responsibilities:
* Deep knowledge of SQA (Supplier Quality Assurance), manufacturing and technics.
* Assess specifications and control between functions (R&D, Engineering, Suppliers)
* Support Manufacturing department to industrialise development and set up assembly sequencing (process flow chart)
* Technically lead Sourcing department and SQA team for supplier audits
* Review and validate PFMEA provided by suppliers
* Leverage PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and manufacturing best practice with external suppliers
* Technical coordination through production start-up (Head-of-Series) to finalisation
* Make recommendation for equipment procurement
* Lead on VA/VE exercise with supplier in order to define alternative manufacturing processes and support "should cost" analysis
* Actively broadening and deepening HVDC knowledge and share specialised expertise to other engineers of any level
* Significant travel across the EU and other countries for supply chain integration
* Promote and support "Design for Manufacturing" for product development, by supporting specification of key components such as cables, busbars, heatsinks, metal sheets, plastic components


The candidate will probably be educated to degree level in a related science such as mechanical or electrical engineering. It is important that the candidate can demonstrate previous experience on development of technical product, manufacturing, technics and VA/VE.

In addition to relevant experience, candidates should be familiar with modern 3D-CAD tools (PTC Creo 2.0 or over, and Windchill PDMlink 9.1 or over) and demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge across different disciplines.

It is also expected that applicants should have strong experience in industrialisation and supplier chain integration and manufacturing environment.

An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities. Ideally, the candidate will have a good track record of leading a team of engineers in delivering a technical project on time and according to the scope.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Skills and Experience:
* Design for manufacturing and DFMEA
* Industrialisation and strong ability of failure analysis and root cause tracking
* Manufacturing processes (handling, lifting, assembling, setting, testing) and PFMEA
* Supply chain integration (e.g. technical communication, clause-by-clause review, production line audit)
* Previous experience in Power electronic converter design (e.g. HVDC/FACTS applications, variable-speed drives), PCB assembly design (e.g. gate driver, power supply, bespoke PCBs), or Mechanical Design (e.g. material properties, including composites) would be preferred
* Communication application (e.g. PON, fibre optics, transceiver)
* Familiar with PTC Creo 2.0, Simulation tools such as Matlab-Simulink
* Hands-on activities with design, implement and perform validations (e.g. prepare test object, set-up test plan, carry out the tests, apply quick fix when required)
