Our client is a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions for the infrastructure (pipe systems, and power and communication cables), automotive and advanced packaging markets. They have its headquarters in the UAE and Singapore.
Our client is on the way to increase their capacity even further with a multi - billion dollar mega- project. By the end of 2013, they will have added a 3rd Ethane cracker to create the largest Ethane cracker complex in the world.

The Role:
About the job
Carries out the design and implementation of new automation system based control strategies, including analyzing users’ requirements, preparing program logic and specifications, supervising testing and debugging of applications and systems. The following are individual specialization areas:


Analyzes users’ requirements for DCS systems; designs program logic and prepares program specifications; supervises and participates in program development, configuration testing and debugging.

Provides support to operations for reloading of training simulator during changeover from Ethylene to Polyethylene and vice versa.

Provides support to operation to meet such targets as quality, product transition, start-up & shut down and throughput. Monitors status of APC Controller & Control loop performance.

Expert Systems / RTIMS
Provides support to operations for state transition of furnaces such as normal to decoke, Standby to normal etc, and also intelligent alarm handing.

Ensures client connectivity and assists RTIMS users. Performs periodic database maintenance and archives. Helps users to configure reports, trends & graphics.

Maintains help desk related data and information and prepares reports and data.


Provides daily support to users of all system such as Distribution Control System (DCS), Advanced Process Control Application (APC), Real Time Database System (RTDB) based on daily requests received. Discusses major modifications requirements with Team Leader and implements minor modifications directly after approval. Participates in the configuration of graphics, reports, database and real-time computer systems.

Monitors DCS and computer system performance and proposes modifications/ enhancement and tuning to the hardware, operating systems and communication systems to improve system efficiency and performance.

Liaises and discusses with Process Engineers and supervisors modifications related to Process and Plant Automation, such as material balance, fuel balance, advanced control, and proposes solutions as appropriate.

Participates in the commissioning and acceptance testing of newly installed DCS, APC, RTDB, Expert Systems and Applications. Tests new releases of systems and application software. Coordinates with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) engineers on common issues.

Participates with maintenance personnel in diagnosing DCS, ESD and computer systems faults, providing solutions as required.

Monitors the work of external consultants, contractors and engineers involved in the design and maintenance of automation and computer systems. Check reports submitted by external personnel to ensure compliance with specified requirements and verifies invoices.

Analyses and monitors (DCS, RTDB and Expert Systems) System performance and performs system administration and maintain proper and periodical back up and recovery.

Assists in training engineers, systems users, trainees and developees on the proper use and efficient utilization of DCS and computer systems in the plant.

Carries out other similar or related duties as assigned. Includes maintaining documentation for real-time and office systems, carrying out necessary maintenance, regeneration and updating of real-time database, assisting Automation Team Leader in the preparation of budgets, etc.

Provide round the clock telephone assistance and on-call assistance in rotation.


Frequent contacts with users and to Automation Team leader to clarify requirements and coordinate appropriate solutions. Contacts with external consultants/engineers regarding contracted projects in automation.


Reports to Automation Team Leader Works according to established policies, procedures and professional standards. Completed work is subject to review and direction.


Gives work directions to contracted Programmers and engineers.


Exposed to eyestrain due to computer operation for about 50% of the work-time. Air-conditioned environment and works mainly either in central Control Building or Satellite Instrument Shelters.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
B.Sc. Degree in Electronics engineering, Computer engineering, Process engineering or equivalent.

Minimum 6 years experience in Plant Automation / control systems in areas of implementation and support preferably in an oil/gas or petrochemical industry.

Good Knowledge of English. – Spoken and written
