The Company:
Our Client’s engineering division, has been a leader in the design of drilling facilities for offshore platforms worldwide for over 30 years. The company’s 700-strong workforce provides a range of engineering services from pre-project and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) through detail design, construction support, hook-up and commissioning.

The Role:
Purpose Of Job: Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Chief Discipline Engineer is responsible for the provision of discipline engineering staff, resources and technology in a manner which promotes excellence of performance both for the individuals concerned and the Company. Maintain Technical Assurance of the discipline output in all areas of the Company’s activities worldwide.

Area(s) of Responsibility: Technical Integrity, Resource Provision, Staff Competency and quality of engineering discipline deliverables

Supervises: Direct functional responsibility for Structural and Architectural Lead Engineers and overall responsibility for all Structural, Architectural and Weight Control discipline personnel.


Key Tasks Technical Authority
a) Promote through the encouragement and co-ordination of technical paper preparation, presentation and attendance at seminars, conferences, etc.
b) Maintain discipline procedures, control systems and guidelines.
c) Act as Independent Chairman for Audits and Design Reviews.
d) Maintain an overview of all project work in the Company by regular contact with Project Managers and Project Team Members.
e) Co-ordinate discipline experience captured from projects.
f) Co-ordinate the communication of Best Practice and prepare discipline guidelines.
g) Act as point of contact with other companies and overseas offices within the group to provide support.
h) Develop the Company’s capability and knowledge in the core business area of technology by such means as; review of ongoing work through regular team meetings, review of published literature, promoting internal seminars/meetings to educate others in special skill areas.
i) Review changes in legislation, standards and code of practice and advise affected personnel.
j) Ensure engineering software meets the engineering requirements and is validated, and that improvements and problems are collated and disseminated to all Project Managers.
k) Identify and investigate, through discussions with project members any new engineering software which would enhance the technical capability of the Company.
l) Act as a point of contact with Professional Institution and Industry Organisations.

Technical Assurance
(a) Support projects by provision of competent personnel as required.
(b) Monitor and develop the competence of staff to meet the requirements of projects.
(c) Maintain an overview of the discipline development requirements to meet Company needs.
(d) Establish discipline procedures, control systems and guidelines to comply with Company Safety Management System and Legislation.
(e) Arrange with Project Managers for Discipline Technical Audits of Projects with the following objectives:
o Assist projects in maintaining appropriate professional standards for project execution.
Confirm that technical work undertaken is consistent with the Discipline’s professional standards for the relevant project’s technical complexity and commercial liability.

Technical Assurance Cont.
o Ensure that the project generated documentation reflects a fit-for-purpose design and complies with the contract requirements.
(f) Establish discipline performance measures and monitoring requirements with projects.
(g) Promote awareness of Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality aspects of discipline work to achieve fit-for-purpose engineering.

Primary Responsibilities:

Safety
• Demonstration of safe approach in design and working practices, following the objectives of Health, Safety and Environmental Plans.
• Encouragement of attention to safety in personnel under the Chief Engineer’s control.
Financial
• Awareness and understanding of the business drivers within the Client relationship and how these can be influenced by innovative designs and fit-for-purpose solutions.
Business Development
• Development of good working relationship with Client personnel.
• Use of opportunities at meetings with Clients, Vendors etc. to learn of additional work which could undertake, and to promote capabilities.
• Communication with Operations and Maintenance personnel to determine any opportunities where thhe client could provide an engineering solution to existing problems or for improving the existing practice.
Departmental Development
• Liaison with Head of Engineering to identify areas for development and to implement improvements in working practices.
Systems and Processes
• Provision of information as required by clients systems.
People
• Management of Structural, Architectural and Weight Control discipline personnel.
• Training and development of Graduate Discipline Engineers and Trainee Discipline Designers.
• Annual appraisal of Structural, Architectural and Weight Control discipline staff.
Quality
• Adherence to the Clients KOMS.
• Keeping up to date with technical developments, client, national and international standards and legislative requirements related to the role.
• Responsible for ensuring that all discipline personnel are aware of continuous improvement issues and kept abreast of new technology.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Must have drilling or offshore experience
