The Company:
Is a leading Automotive manufacturer with a reputation for outstanding quality the world over. With demand increasing and an upturn in production, there is a need to bring further skills into the business to deliver on current and future projects.

The Role:

To provide expert theoretical and practical capability, to be aware of, and to understand in detail Automotive Cooling systems. To specify, engineer, and validate appropriate systems and components into the company's products for Powertrain Cooling (Engine, transmission, PAS & Hybrid vehicle components). To keep abreast of Cooling system developments & future trends.


Accountable for design and validation of components/systems which, when introduced into production, are safe, legal and otherwise fit for purpose.
a) Identify and analyse alternative design solutions to satisfy functional, technical, legal and styling specifications, in line with engineering strategies, initially from existing supplier capability, but if necessary through initiating/conducting original design/development.
b) Calculate component & system performance. Request CFD calculations and interpret results
c) Manage detail component design, packaging, and data release activities Develop hardware and airflow management for new vehicles & model year updates in line with vehicle performance targets, cooling system targets, manufacturing, legal, cost, weight and timing requirements.
d) Through consultation/agreement with Functional Manager select appropriate solution.
e) Compose / maintain design FMEA

Accountable for defining and planning own work for approval by Functional Manager.
a) Develop activity timing plan for assigned features, identifying all relevant activities and their customers/suppliers (internal and external) and obtaining their agreement/buy-in.
b) Through consultation/agreement with Functional Manager define timeline & deliver to agreed milestones

3. Accountable for planning, monitoring and expediting test, validation and certification of systems/components to demonstrate successful achievement of 1&2 above.
a) In conjunction with Functional Manager agree component and system validation and certification requirements to satisfy Bentley/VW Group standards and international safety legislation. (Specification, function, durability & legislation)
b) Manage/execute the component & system tests identified above, resolve any engineering problems and produce the required documentation for approval.
c) Complete the formal sign-off system with supplier/contract house and through internal processes, in agreement with Functional Manager

4. Accountable for timely parts release for prototypes and production and for timely delivery of all product engineering activities to ensure timely vehicle launch to quality and cost.
a) Accountable overall for parts release to Purchase and Manufacturing in line with parts timing targets loaded in the company part level timing system.
b) Manage, monitor and, if necessary, expedite supplier and/or external design house activities concerned in the design, testing, release and delivery of the prototype parts (which may also be necessary to support initial production).
c) Accountable for timely delivery of all product engineering activities to meet start of production and for reporting progress, together with own recovery actions where necessary, to Functional Manager and at formal Project Reviews.

5. Developing and maintaining technical knowledge/capability.
a) Self-education through evaluating competitor vehicles, reading technical literature and maintaining a network of contacts within the industry and educational establishments.


1. Accountable for identifying any issue or risk affecting feature/system delivery, for recommending remedial action, for ensuring this is visible and understood by the Functional Manager and that appropriate action is taken.
2. Makes recommendations on supplier selection.
3. Advises Supplier Quality Assurance of standards required/achievable and can arbitrate disputes.
4. Approves production concessions and permits.
5. Agrees vehicle assembly processes with Manufacturing Engineering.
6. Formally signs off systems/components to the approved internal process and with suppliers.


1. Normally has no subordinates but will be required to direct CAD designer & technicians
2. Collaborates closely with other engineers/Functional Managers, particularly those who are dependent upon their control devices to operate their components/systems.
3. Liaises with all levels in the business up to senior manager, particularly within Purchasing, Logistics, Finance and Manufacturing, and with suppliers/contract houses at all levels.


Appropriate engineering degree or extensive experience.
