Our clients nuclear business has been operating for over 40 years, and today they are leading the renaissance in nuclear power.
they have operations based in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North America, and are fully engaged on the development of the next generation of nuclear power stations. Alongside their new build expertise, they maintain existing nuclear fleet and decommission those coming to the end of their life.

The Role:
Our client is now looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to work in the Whitehaven area.

Role
To organise, lead, coordinate and direct a multi-discipline design engineering team (including technical and safety case, procurement and supply chain as applicable) that delivers safe fit for purpose design solutions that take into account construction, commissioning and operational requirements in accordance with the agreed project strategy, scope, schedule and budget that meet design intent, and technical, legal, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

Engineering and technical risk management for specific area of responsibility. This includes: risk identification and assessment, development of mitigation plans and ongoing review / monitoring, re-assessment and communication of potential project impacts to the project baseline.
Establishes the design delivery strategy (in collaboration with the Project Manager) including detailed project specific engineering execution plan that incorporates efficient and effective design tactics and that aligns with overall project execution strategy/plan.
Leads the development of the engineering elements of the project baseline scope, schedule and budget.
Establishes and maintains control of the engineering baseline (scope, schedule and budget) via the project change control process.
Communicates functional specifications, concepts and other requirements established by the Delivery Directorate to the design team.
Defines, separates and delegates to appropriate internal and supply chain organisations, as appropriate, portions of the design work scope as required by the design delivery strategy.
Monitors, reviews and provides timely and accurate reporting on engineering status (including technical and safety case) and progress against schedules, evaluates deviations, develops recovery plans and initiates / coordinates corrective action when required.
Prepares periodic forecasts of design engineering resource needs and coordinates with the discipline Responsible Engineers and Chief Engineers to mobilize/demobilize internal and external design engineering resources.
Ensures the awareness and understanding of the design engineering team of any project-specific policies, processes and procedures including the coordination of any required training.
Prepares, approves or recommends approval of engineering-related project procedures.
Coordinates and communicates about the engineering effort with Project Management, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning, Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality (EHS&Q) and Project Controls.
Provides input to annual performance reviews of project-assigned staff.
Promotes best practice and the sharing of project-specific LFE across the engineering business and sharing of external LFE with the project team.
Reviews and endorses requests for tender, tender analyses and purchase recommendations for procurement of equipment and services within Engineering’s scope of responsibility.
Communicates complex project technical issues and recommends solutions to project and functional management as directed and as appropriate.

Accountabilities:
To the Delivery Project Manager (Task Manager, Study Manager etc) for:
Delivering fit for purpose, integrated and robust engineering solutions that meet the safety, legal, regulatory, business and functional specification requirements in a timely and cost effective manner.
In conjunction with the Project Manager, development and management of the engineering element of the project baseline (scope, schedule and budget).
Identification of trends and initiation of project specific baseline change control actions.
Management, leadership and performance management of the multi-discipline engineering delivery team.
Managing the delivery of the engineering work scope to agreed project schedule and budget in accordance with the project execution plan, the engineering execution plan, the project functional specification, the project Quality Plan and relevant Project Management Procedures.
Identifying the need for and managing engagement of the Supply Chain, as required, for project specific engineering activities.
In conjunction with the Project Manager, management of all project specific technical and engineering risks.
Maintaining the competency of team members by identifying and facilitating delivery of appropriate project / Delivery Directorate specific training.
Developing and executing effective design strategies and plans in line with overall project / Delivery Directorate strategies and plans.
Engineering progress monitoring, analysis and accurate reporting to the Project Manager.

To the Technical Manager for:
Managing the performance of the engineering work scope in accordance with all relevant Conduct of Engineering Procedures.
Ensuring that all project specific engineering work complies with all safety, legal, regulatory and business requirements.
Ensuring that the duties of the CDM Co-ordinator are adequately discharged.
Ensuring that all project specific engineering work is performed by SQEP resources.
Ensuring that engineering resource needs are accurately forecasted and communicated.
Ensuring that the engineering Intelligent Customer duties for the project are discharged in a robust and timely manner.
Delivering an engineering configuration and documentation that aligns and integrates with the Delivery Directorate, Operating Unit and / or facility requirements.
Ensuring that appropriate design review activities are performed in a timely manner.
Collation and dissemination of project / Delivery Directorate specific LFE.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Chartered Engineer (any technical discipline)
Degree level education.
Multi-discipline design team management experience.
Project management experience.
Tender/bidding experience.
Reporting/forecasting experience.
Technical design background.
Nuclear or other highly regulated industry background.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
Sellafield site experience beneficial.
