The Company:
Our client designs, manufactures and repairs electro-mechanical radiation monitoring equipment and instrumentation & control products for the defence and civil power markets.

The Role:
The Engineering Support Manager will be responsible for providing and managing engineering support functions including component engineering, obsolescence, supporting process development and being custodian of Company and external standards. Reporting to the Chief Engineer this key role is within the newly formed Technical Management Group, forming an essential function and expected to grow in line with the business.

• Monitoring and advising the Chief Engineer regarding legislation changes that will impact the business
• Representing the Company at external advisory group meetings such as COG (Components Obsolescence Group) and SMART (Surface Mount and Related Technologies)
• Advising on the selection of components ensuring contractual requirements are satisfied before approval is authorised and advising on component obsolescence and obsolescence strategies available to projects
• Maintaining the component database to provide information for development, procurement and manufacturing
• Reviewing / investigating developments in components and materials including cost and availability
• Providing a service to validate items lists before issue in respect of the component definition and approval
• Maintaining external standards library and liaising with external standards authorities to keep abreast of developments in standards and reporting back to the Company
• Supporting the Chief Engineer in the development of processes to improve the quality of products and services
• Supporting QA in auditing suppliers (particularly component suppliers)
• Ensuring the organisation, planning, progress, monitoring and reporting of all aspects of allocated work
• Providing administrative and technical support and carrying out other tasks as required by the Chief Engineer
• Representing the Company in meetings (internal and customer meetings) providing minutes or visit reports
• Ensuring that communications from the team, verbal and written are clear and unambiguous
• Ensuring that the work area and equipment are maintained in a clean and tidy state and that equipment used for testing is in calibration, returning out of calibration items to test equipment stores

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Knowledge of electronic and mechanical component technologies, obsolescence strategies and monitoring, design and component standards and legislation changes
• Experience gained within the nuclear sector or any highly regulated industry is desirable
• Significant experience in an electronics / mechanical design environment producing products for nuclear or military platforms including include experience in selecting electronic / mechanical components / materials
• Smart, confident, outgoing and focused individual able to engage at all levels within the business with good communication skills and ability to influence others and present solutions to a varied audience
• Must be good at problem solving with the ability to propose innovative / creative solutions
• A team player with the flexibility to contribute to a number of projects at the same time making clear decisions supported by reasoned argument and able to be assertive when defending decisions
