The Company:
Our client is a nuclear specialist, covering both civilian and defence sectors, across the complete lifecycle from New Build, through Operations and Maintenance, to final decommissioning and waste disposal.

The Role:
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

Co-ordination of the Clients Intelligent for environment obligations, providing performance assurance and advice

POSITION IN ORGANISATION

Direct report to Head of Nuclear Assurance

Interface with Heads of SLC Programmes, Functional Heads, Executive, PBO/SLC staff and directors, regulators and government officials.

SCOPE OF JOB

The EWPM co-ordinates the Clients environmental protection specialist capability, enabling the Client to be an intelligent client for its environmental activities. The EWPM provides authoritative advice on environmental issues and their regulation, supporting the Clients delivery of its obligations to safeguard the environment, and providing essential specialist input on relevant policy, regulatory and standards issues. The EWPM provides specialist performance assurance and sanction advice on environmental issues.

DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Expected to act responsibly and advise / take independent decisions on matters of particular significance or contention, with the authority to:
Access the Clients sites and communicate with SLCs, PBOs and contractors at senior and working levels, environmental and other regulators, officials in local and central government, and other key stakeholders as required by this role.
Obtain assess and report information about the activities of the Clients and its contractors necessary to deliver the accountabilities of the role.
Co-ordinate and represent the Clients Environmental Intelligent Client role, including support to the Clients research and skills programmes.
Intelligent Client role
Co-ordinate the ‘Intelligent Client’ obligation for environmental issues across the Client and provide advice and technical support on environmental issues to the Clients Executives and senior managers
Develop and maintain appropriate interfaces with environmental regulators and relevant Government officials to enable the Client and its contractors to progress efficiently with nuclear decommissioning and cleanup, providing the focal policy and strategic contact point on environmental, climate change and sustainability issues
Identify and champion the resolution of legal and environmental issues and policy conflicts impacting programme delivery on regulated sites
Provide specialist environmental advice and support to the development and delivery of the Clients strategy, and ensure that the strategy and its related plans and programmes comply with the environmental assessment requirements of relevant regulations
Sponsor, develop, and monitor the Clients environmental policies and procedures to ensure they are in line with UK regulatory requirements and consistent with relevant Government Policy
Specialist Environmental Assurance role
Support the Head of Nuclear Assurance and the SLC facing teams in the oversight of environmental management systems at the Clients designated sites by monitoring and analysis of environmental metrics, high impact or high potential environmental incidents and events conducting assurance reviews
Provide advice on the Clients own environmental performance and the delivery of targets to minimise its environmental footprint

In addition, he/she will undertake other activities commensurate with their skills and experience as and when required
Staff will be expected to support and implement corporate decisions and initiatives as instructed by their Line Manager.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Good honours degree in science or engineering subject and membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. Chartered Environmentalist or Chartered Radiation Protection Practitioner)
Experienced practitioner in the field of environmental protection in the context of the nuclear industry within a regulator or nuclear operator on environmental matters or radioactive waste management.
An understanding of Government environmental and nuclear policy, legislation and regulation, including RSA93, EIADR, EIA, WRA91, COMAH, EPA90, abstraction licensing, environmental permitting of process and waste facilities (PPC99/EPR08) and environmental legislation applying to public bodies e.g. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)
Thorough understanding of environmental decision making process including BPEO, BPM and BAT as applied within the nuclear sector, and must also have knowledge and experience of how these requirements and standards are applied at operational and decommissioning
