The Role:
PURPOSE
This job specification details the requirements for the role of Environmental Engineer, reporting directly to the Operations Manager. The role’s primary purpose is to ensure the management of physico-chemical processes with particular attention to the integrity of the boiler and turbine plant. To maintain Environmental control for the station.
MAJOR DUTIES
Control of boiler water treatment
 Monitoring chemical dosing of all boiler systems to ensure that optimum protection is maintained. Advise management on the Selection of suppliers and dosing regimes.
 Monitoring and measurement of scale development in boiler system.
Management of Cooling water (and boiler) treatment contract
 Monitor the results of analyses for trends and ensure correct responses are put in place.
 Carry out regular contract review meetings with service supplier.
Management of L8 Compliance
 To be the responsible person for control of Legionella.
 Develop and initiate Cooling Tower Legionella control against guidance ACOP L8.
 Continually review system results and deliver proactive responses whenever necessary.
 Monitor progress of jobs identified in L8 matrix.
Environmental control (waste disposal)
 Ensure that all waste removed from site is in accordance with statutory requirements. Audit the waste handlers on an annual basis and report results at the annual EMS management review.
 Watch briefs on developments in legislation and other trends in waste management.
Environmental control (IPC Authorisation or PPC Permit returns)
 To be the nominated lead contact for the Environment Agency.
 To maintain a liaison with the Environmental Group, providing data and information as required.
Environmental control (Emissions and discharge monitoring)
 To be the responsible Person for Monitoring
 To monitor the CEMS output and investigate atypical results
 To monitor liquid discharges and investigate atypical results
Environmental Control EU ETS
 To maintain and develop the Excel spreadsheets used to generate the Carbon Dioxide mass emission figure
 All associated records will be maintained to support the validation audit to government standards.
 To maintain and develop supporting Procedures
Environmental control, chemical handling (COSHH)
Business Management-Environmental and Quality systems
 To take the lead on maintaining EMAS accreditation.

Management of laboratory services
 To ensure that site monitoring instruments (Personal Oxygen and Methane monitors, flammable atmosphere detectors) are serviced at 6 monthly intervals.
 To take such samples as are required and arrange analysis at competitive rates
Training
 To deliver Environmental, Cooling Water and Chemistry training to all new starters in the Operations Department.
 To deliver annual refresher training on Environmental, Cooling water and Chemistry matters to all Operations staff
 To deliver information updates to all staff on the BMS Environmental initiatives as agreed with site management
Projects management and development
 To identify site processes which carry a potential for improvement and develop a business plan for the realisation of the improvement
 To progress assigned Management of Change
Site management
 To report to the Operations manager at an agreed frequency with abridged notes and monthly with a full written report covering an agreed agenda.
 To control such budgets as management decide are appropriate to the remit of the position.
Additional duties
 Provision of advice to the operation of other relevant operations off site at the discretion of site management.
 To be fully conversant with Safe Working Procedures and following relevant training.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Chemical or Environmental Degree.
NEBOSH Certificate

Experience
Relevant experience in a position of responsibility.
Successful contribution & work experience in a 24/7 process environment. To include experience of:
- Maintenance & contract management.
- Outage management.
- Operations interface, policies & procedure.
- Legislative, best practice standards & insurance compliance.
Relevant Experience in the process or power generation environment.
Relevant successful people management, motivation and development skills.
Working cross functionally delivering policies, initiatives & compliance with company & legislative requirements.

Knowledge
Knowledge & application of:
- SHE systems, ensuring compliance, risk & improvement.
- Quality systems, ensuring compliance, risk & improvement.
- Legislation pertinent to Chemical & Environment standards.
