The Role:

This role is as an electronics system engineer within the Powertrain Electronics team.

Responsible for the providing an electrical systems platform on which the systems calibration engineer can develop the application. The systems in question are engine control, including ECU, sensors and actuators


To take responsibility for the development and maintenance of the engine electrical system components.

To investigate engine management-related issues, both in the vehicle development cycle and also in the field


Reports to a Lead Engineer who in turn reports to a Functional Manager of Powertrain Electronics within the Car Electronics team organisation as part of the Electrical Engineering department.

Collaborates closely with other Engineers/Lead Engineers and Functional Managers within the Powertrain calibration and mechanical departments, particularly those who are dependent upon his/her control devices to operate their components/systems.


• Define system electrical architecture, functionality and connectivity
• Responsible for packaging of all components
• Define specific software or hardware functions. Develop and validate where appropriate
• Formulate and maintain robust component/system delivery plans
• Manage component and system suppliers in order to meet the cost, time and quality targets
• Conduct system FMEA's
• Support simulator and pre-production vehicle builds and feedback learning into the design process
• Plan and execute all component releases for production
• Perform root cause investigation and analysis on vehicle issues
• Plan and execute component validation activities through simulation, laboratory experiments and on-vehicle tests
• Manage component change, including feasibility, cost and timing evaluations
• Investigate in-field issues, identification of root causes and introduction of remedial actions
• Expedite Engineering Sign-Off (ESO) for all components
• Follow company Product Development Processes
• Complete required technical documentation including specification and test reports

Essential Skills / Qualifications:

• Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
• To be a chartered Engineer or working towards chartership
• Knowledge of vehicle communications networks and diagnostic protocols
• Knowledge and experience of latest vehicle electronic systems
• Conversant with electronic hardware and software design processes
• Familiarity with methods for specification and modeling such as Matlab Simulink, Stateflow would be an advantage
• Use of diagnostic tools such as CANoe and INCA would be an advantage
• Demonstrated experience working for an automotive manufacturer or relevant supplier
• Relevant knowledge and experience of either engine management or automatic transmission control
• Appreciation of sensor and actuator technologies and the methods of interfacing such components
• Knowledge and appreciation of vehicle packaging issues

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:

• A strong engineering grounding and an ability to understand and communicate electronic engineering issues
• Excellent project management, organisation and personal interface skills.
• Dynamic and proactive self-starter able to work with minimum of supervision.
• German language skills would be advantageous
• Good communication skills
• Self-motivated
• Flexible (able to work extra hours and to travel abroad as and when required)
• Supportive of a team approach to development activities
