The Role:

Our Client is the world leader in the Mining and Minerals / Resource industry. With over 120 years experience in the world's largest resource projects, our Client is continuing to invest in a world-class iron ore mining project, based in South Eastern Guinea. An exceptional opportunity has now arisen for a General Manager to join a very experienced Projects team, in order to deliver a significant infrastructure development on time and within cost.

We are seeking a General Manager (GM) to manage a multitude of project management disciplines including forecasting, project controls, contract administration as well as the engineering and commissioning teams. The GM will support the Director of Projects to deliver a demanding and remote high value infrastructure project with initial iron ore expected by 2014. The infrastructure development will include 2 iron ore mines, over 650km of rail including over 20km of tunnels along with significant wharf infrastructure.

This opportunity will be a Fly In / Fly Out based role into Guinea on a 6 weeks on / 2 weeks off roster. 2 additional days will also be given to assist with travel. The suitable GM will fly in / fly out from either Europe or African locations. This role will see the successful GM

• Be accountable for leading the project management team to ensure construction of site infrastructure meets health and safety standards/targets; environmental and social obligations; construction milestones; capital expenditure targets and operability requirements.
• Oversee the capital estimates for each stream and work with relevant peers to confirm alignment of capital and business strategies for the project.
• Manage and oversee planning and coordination of the activities of the Construction team for each work stream and for ensuring that the EPCM contractors allocate correct staffing levels in order to meet required objectives and standards.
• Responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance to staff within the commissioning team on the project.
• Responsible for the review and approval in conjunction with the other members of the Simandou leadership team on the commissioning and start up standards and procedures as prepared by the EPCM and EPC contractor(s).
• Guide the project management team and provide assistance as a technical link in estimation, procurement & contracting, construction planning, and project construction.
• Oversee the provision of EPCM and Contractor services in support of project implementation.
• Responsible for implementation of project controls, forecasting and other management processes in the project management teams.
• Oversee the provision of support to estimate, review and evaluate tender documents/ITT packages; guide and recommend on the techno-economic viability of bids across the work streams to ensure overall optimization for the project.

Naturally, due to this demanding role there will be some mandatory requirements. These are:

• A graduate in Engineering or a related discipline with an excellent track record in project management and delivery of challenging Greenfield infrastructure projects in excess of $1 billion.
• A PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent experience is imperative for this position.
• Effective demonstration of leadership capabilities with large teams is a must.
• Sound commercial acumen with experience in contract management and development.
• Sound understanding of engineering, procurement, project controls and construction management processes and in the systems and processes required for effective management thereof.
• Ability to fully understand a business case, inputs and key drivers.
• A strong customer focus is required as well as an ability to understand the needs of clients and deliver the required outcome.
• Leadership of HS&E systems and the ability to create a positive culture in this area.
• Although not required, fluency in French and previous experience operating in French developing countries/regions would be highly beneficial.
