The Role:
Act as an embedded resource within the Development / Subsurface teams and as a senior member to the GIS Services team. Participate in the continued growth towards Nexen’s global Enterprise GIS strategy. Provide one-on-one assistance to the business units in the form of GIS analysis, mapping, and spatial data management support. Understand the needs of the E&P business units and recommend GIS solutions, working with the GIS Team Lead to implement new solutions.

Work directly with the Development and Exploration business units to satisfy their GIS requirements. Identify business needs and suggest ways GIS can be used to enhance business activities; educate the business on the possibilities of using advanced GIS tools for analysis of data, spatial data modelling, and other GIS tasks. Use GIS tools to create and manage spatial data, perform data analysis and create maps. Work with the GIS Team Lead to help carry out GIS projects, including the ongoing global Enterprise GIS project and be comfortable suggesting new technology to the GIS team.

Teamwork - Work closely with Geoscience Professionals in the E&P departments; team work amongst the UK Technical Systems and Calgary GIS Services teams is essential

Global Cultural Sensitivity - An acceptable cultural sensitivity towards colleagues who reside in countries other than the UK and employees with different cultural backgrounds
Technical/ Operating Skills - Strong analytical and problem solving skills; good customer service skills and understanding of business requirements; very good GIS and spatial data management skills
Initiative - Ability and desire to work independently; have the initiative to research and recommend new GIS technologies that will enhance the business
Total Business Understanding - Limited to E&P activity phases and underlying processes in relation to GIS support

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in GIS (or equivalent), or Degree in Geosciences with GIS training/education
Previous work experience as a GIS Analyst/Specialist
Previous experience working in either Exploration or Development business units in a petroleum company
ESRI GIS course certification is preferred

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
GIS experience; extensive experience with ArcGIS desktop and extensions
Good understanding of geodetics and coordinate reference systems including transformations; must be able to verify data location accuracy
Must have experience working with Geoscience E&P applications and/or data sources
Understanding of GIS tools and data available to a petroleum company
The willingness and flexibility to work with a variety of people at all levels of the organization
High standards of excellence and attention to detail
