The Role:
Maintain the required Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality Standards across the business by ensuring the provision and guidance on all relevant policies, procedures and standards in line with current and emerging legislation and approved Codes of Practice.
Advise all personnel on safe methods of working and compliance with Company procedures. To maintain the operational team awareness of the potential for unplanned losses of people, time, reputation and equipment, whether belonging to the client or others.
Where unplanned losses occur, investigate the event to identify the root cause, subsequently advising and assisting in production of mitigation methods.


 The HSE Officer is fully responsible for familiarising themselves with the site HSEQ documentation, systems and procedures relevant to their area(s) of responsibility and for ensuring that they are understood and applied to everyone within their respective area/s of responsibility.
 Shall ensure that only safe working practices are applied by persons within their area(s) of responsibility, with care for the environment and due consideration for quality requirements.
 Shall exercise the general authority to stop and deal with unsafe acts they witness.
 Shall ensure, so far as is reasonable practicable, that all persons who come within their area(s) of responsibility have received adequate information, instruction or supervision necessary for them to prevent or avoid risks to their health and safety.
 Shall ensure, so far as is reasonable practicable, that a high standard of housekeeping is maintained at all times throughout their area(s) of responsibility.
 Shall ensure, so far as is reasonable practicable, that work equipment, premises and protective clothing and equipment provided within their area(s) of responsibility are used as required and maintained in an efficient state and in good working order and repair.
 Carry out HSEQ inspections as required, identifying issues and assisting in the provision of prompt and practical solutions.
 Conduct, or assist with, HSEQ investigations to establish root cause and implement corrective, preventive actions.
 Shall ensure that HSEQ problems which cannot be resolved immediately are raised promptly with the Senior Safety Officer and the relevant project manager.

Main Duties:

 Read and understand the requirements of current Health, Safety and Environmental Regulations as they affect or are likely to affect the company's business.
 Ensure procedures are adhered to at all times to ensure compliance with legislation and the guidelines of OHSAS 18001 (to be superseded when issued by ISO: 45001), ISO14001:2015 and ISO 900:2015.
 Attend internal (and external) Health & Safety, Project & Operational meetings to represent the company's interests in health and safety matters.
 Monitor all shipyard activities including but not limited to, hull cleaning, blasting operations, painting, tank cleaning, insulation, hot work and other activities that have the potential to cause a hazardous situation or an environmental impact.
 Advise yard management of the requirements to comply with relevant legislation.
 Monitor and ensure compliance with company H&S policy, the Health & Safety at Work Act and all other relevant Legislation.
 Enforcing the mandatory wearing of safety hats, overalls, safety footwear, eye protection and other appropriate PPE.
 Ensure that all company personnel, sub-contractors, customer representatives and visitors receive Health & Safety induction training.
 Conduct Gas Inspection and monitoring of confined spaces. (Once competency achieved.)
 Issue, validate, monitor and control permits to work in accordance with the procedures for permit to work issuance.
 Conduct regular safety inspections with management, customers and representatives of the workforce as directed by the Senior Safety Officer.
 To report and record safety performance
 To investigate, report and recommend action on accidents, near misses and non-conformance's, liaising with outside agencies where directed by the Senior Safety Officer
 To carryout, and assist others with, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
 To provide HSEQ awareness training and information to all employees, subcontractors as necessary
 To assist line management in dealing with emergencies on ships and elsewhere
 To ensure safety related equipment is maintained and tested
 To assess and monitor subcontractors when on site
 To comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant legislation affecting the work of the team.
 Conduct, or assist with, internal audits of the HSEQ management system

 To become commercially aware of the project requirements, and the potential impact of advice whilst maintain legislative requirements.
 Work with the project team to ensure a good working relationship develops.
 Represent the company in a professional manner to customer’s clients and contractors.
 Behave professionally, competently and ensuring compliancy with legislation and company policy
 Perform other such duties as may from time to time be reasonably assigned.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
Qualified to NEBOSH General Certificate Level or equivalent (or achieving within six months)
Experience of Working within a H&S function in a ship repair facility or similar
Knowledge of industry best practice within H, S & E
