The Company:
Is a leading Automotive manufacturer with a reputation for outstanding quality the world over. With demand increasing and an upturn in production, there is a need to bring further skills into the business to deliver on current and future projects.

The Role:

To provide the expert theoretical and practical capability to validate the Company’s products with regard to strength, function, durability and environmental performance. To ensure that all interior trim systems are validated with respect to the above prior to being launched in full-scale production.


Reports to a Functional Manager who reports to Head of Department.
Has cross-project responsibility and may be expected to provide verification services to all areas of the business.
Normally has no subordinates but can be required to direct technicians and other engineers with respect to the performance of tests.
Collaborates closely with other Engineers, particularly feature owners, whose parts are being validated. Is expected to contribute actively to cross-functional forums such as SETs or modules and report back on progress against test plans.
Liases with all levels in the business, up to Senior Manager, particularly within Product engineering, Logistics, Finance and Manufacturing, and with Suppliers/Contract Houses at all levels.


1. Responsible for developing and maintaining technical knowledge/capability.
2. Responsible for defining and planning own work for approval by Functional Manager. This entails the writing, updating and controlling of test plans and product validation reports (PVRs).
3. Responsible for validation of components/systems with respect to strength, durability, function and resistance to environmental stresses that represent the best compromise between company and customer needs.
4. Accountable for the delivery of a consolidated test plan and suitable test specifications to deliver the above. Responsible for the writing of new test specifications to support engineering sign-off.
5. Accountable for ensuring that parts are ordered to support testing, based on a bill of materials supplied by the relevant product engineer


• Operates within an agreed annual budget of typically £200,000.
• Recommends authorisation of external spend within budget.
• Accountable for identifying any issue or risk affecting feature/system performance, for recommending remedial action where appropriate, for ensuring this is visible and understood by the Functional manager and the Project Manager and that appropriate action is taken.
• Makes recommendations on concept and material selection based on previous validation experience.
• Advises product engineering functions of test standards required and the environment in which parts will be expected to operate.
• Manages and controls PVR documents which form the basis for engineering sign-off of interior systems.
• Formally signs-off systems/components to the approved internal process with product engineers.

Attained or working towards appropriate Engineering Degree or experience as below.

Minimum 3 years experience working as technician in automotive industry.
Graduates with a relevant final year project and work experience.

1. Developing and maintaining technical knowledge/capability.
a. Self education through evaluating competitor vehicles, reading technical literature and maintaining a network of contacts within the industry and educational establishments.
b. Developing and maintaining sufficient understanding of the mechanical systems/components.
2. Accountable for defining and planning own work for approval by Functional Manager.
a. Develop test timing plans and Product Validation Reports (PVRs) based on the published information including Technical Concept Descriptions (TCDs), Product Description Books (PBRs) and high level program timing plans.
b. Propose appropriate test specifications together with objective and subjective performance targets.
c. Develop activity timing plan for assigned features, identifying all relevant activities and their customers/suppliers (internal and external) and obtaining their agreement/buy-in.
d. Identify detailed test parts requirement in conjunction with the relevant product engineer.
3. Accountable for validation of components/systems which, when introduced into production, are fit for purpose.
a. Through consultation with the relevant product engineer(s), select appropriate testing regimes for interior components or systems.
b. Liaise with internal departments and external suppliers to arrange and coordinate validation activity in support of the agreed test plan.
c. Raise appropriate paperwork according to the validation team processes to carry out test work.
d. Analyse and report on test results, suggesting root causes for any issues that arise and raising concerns via the appropriate group systems where necessary.
e. Analyse and report on test information received from external test houses / suppliers and provide additional guidance where necessary.
4. Accountable for ensuring that the appropriate quantity and level of test parts are ordered and built to support the agreed test plans.
a. Ensure that the appropriate Bills of Material are supplied by the feature owner to enable test parts to be ordered.
b. Liaise with build development and logistics teams to ensure that the correct quantity of test parts are ordered.
c. Maintain communications with feature owners, SETs and modules to ensure that the latest level parts are tested and to keep track of impending changes.
d. Liaise with the appropriate build areas to ensure that test parts are trimmed and assembled in time to support the test plan
