The Company:
Our client, a major owner/operating company, requires expertise for their ongoing oil sands mega-projects in Alberta.

This position is open to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents only.

The Role:
The Minerals Processing Engineer oversees the technical development of the following systems an ongoing Oil Sands Expansion Project:
– Feed slurry hydrotransport
– Bitumen extraction
– Extraction secondary recovery (i.e. flotation)
– Tailings transport

Primarily responsible to manage the design progression of the aforementioned systems to ensure that the design deliverables are complete, timely, and developed in accordance with the Owner’s project management system. Further, ensure that the final design of these systems is safe, regulatory compliant, fit-for-purpose, cost effective, operable, and consistent with the design & build strategy being implemented by the Project Organization.

Key interfaces include the design team, contractor’s organization, operations and other technical teams (such as research and development, EPC firms, third-party consultants, etc.) as necessary. Technical guidance will be provided from the design site lead, the project process engineering lead and Company Functional Support organization, as needed, with respect to process engineering and design to ensure quality and manage changes.

Responsibilities and duties:
• Provide overall mineral process engineering technical leadership and expertise
• Integration of mining and extraction processes to optimize bitumen production and recovery in the most cost effective manner for the total operation
• Steward the progression of technical definition and systems design by the contractor
• Oversee the development and issue of key process deliverables for extraction, including heat and mass balances, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment sizing, line sizing, operating procedures, control narratives and systems descriptions.
• Participate in or support other groups such as construction, commissioning, startup teams and operations to troubleshoot and advise with the plant design intent and operation
• Able to analyze process information and advise operations on appropriate operating guidelines based on ore characteristics, drawing meaningful conclusions
• Identifies bottlenecks and provides ideas to enhance recovery and throughput and provides process engineering input on enhancement projects
• Apply advanced control techniques to improve process performance

There is opportunity for this position to follow through on the project through construction, commissioning, startup and initial operations to assist with ensuring the plant is operating and reliable.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Mineral Processing or Chemical Engineering)
• 10+ years of closely related professional engineering experience, 5+ years of which should be at the Senior Engineer level
• 3+ years experience in a mineral processing design or operations technical/advisor capacity, oil and gas processing experience is an asset
• Strong communication, coordination, technical and problem solving skills as well as solid oral presentation skills
• Experience in oil sands facilities
• 5+ years experience as a process engineer providing operations technical field support
• Experience as a process engineer working on a major project
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software programs
