The Role:
An exciting opportunity for a varied role split between site and office responsibilities at the Winfrith nuclear site.

Main purpose of the role:

To support the Project and Operations teams in developing safety and environment documentation that is compliant with the safety case. This covers all documentation aspects, from risk assessments, working instructions and method statements to safety and environment assessments that enable new operations or waste disposal routes. The post-holder reports to the Site Manager, and is expected to work with a high degree of flexibility between the SHEQ Team and the Operations Teams.


*To be the first point of contact with the client (Magnox) in relation to operational safety requirements
*Ensuring that operations on site are within the envelope of the safety case.
*Acting as Design Authority for the Safety Case and Intelligent Customer for dosimetry and radiation protection advice.
*Ensuring that operations within the scope of the Authority to Operate, and the control and supervision of those operations, are carried out by suitably qualified and experienced persons.
*Maintaining and developing the safety case documentation, categorising it in accordance with internal processes and that appropriate safety case documentation is produced as prescribed by the internal processes and procedures, and scrutinised and approved as required.
*Ensuring that any proposed modifications or experiments which relate to the site area are documented, categorised, scrutinised and approved, in accordance with the above procedures;
*Appointing Area Responsible Officers, to assist with monitoring safety case compliance
*Informing the Site Manager and SHEQ Manager when they are not going to be available on site and arranging suitable substitution arrangements during periods of absence;
*Carrying out an appropriate annual review of operational safety in the site for input into the SHEQ Manager's overall annual review of safety;
*Initiating the procedures for considering the renewal of the ATO in good time before the current ATO and the synchronised appointment of the ATO Holder expires, as required by the internal procedures
*Liaising with the Radiation Protection Advisor/Radioactive Waste Advisor, on matters such as ionising radiations risk assessment, review of radiological safety and compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations and Environmental Permitting Regulations.
*To work with the Project Safety Advisor to write safety documents such as general risk assessments, method statements and Work Instructions and to steer the documents through the route to approval.
*To support the preparation of safety and environment assessments, including those which open up and enable new operations and waste disposal routes.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
*Proven experience of writing documentation to support safety management systems
*Good grasp of safety legislation and safety management requirements
*Communication skills - strong ability to speak with all grades of specialist; the ability to produce high-quality written reports, briefs etc. for wide range of audiences. Computer Literacy (MS Office)
*Degree (Engineering or Science), or equivalent or significant, commensurate experience. ideally with

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
*Experienced in radioactive operations
*Membership of an appropriate professional institution
*Demonstrable appreciation of safety cases and the nuclear and other hazards posed by operations on the site
*Demonstrable understanding of the nuclear regulatory regime, in particular the Conditions attached to the licence by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and to the permit by the Environment Agency (EA)
