The Company:
Our client is a long established and leading SME (£11 million turnover), supplying bespoke electrical systems to key sectors including the mining, rail and oil & gas industries. The company is well established and respected within its current markets and is now experiencing a period of growth and entering new markets.

The Role:
Our client is looking for an experienced Operations Director to join the company on a permanent basis as a member of the board reporting to the Managing Director. Candidates must have proven experience in and currently be in the position of an operations director / head of operations role within a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leads the Operations team, including procurement, Quality, HSE, Manufacturing, Planning and Logistics.
• Develop the operational plans to deliver the business strategy.
• Champion a culture of commercial and financial awareness and efficiency, underpinned by robust communication and education.
• Drives improvement in profitability through structured problem solving and performance management.
• Provides strong functional leadership to the Operations team, ensuring the right mix of competence and knowledge
• Ensures the most efficient use of resources and materials to maximise profitability and customer satisfaction.
• Ensures the accurate and timely production of the monthly output requirements.
• Ensures the business is supported with sound systems and performance data.
• Ensures organisation structure and processes support business objectives
• Monitors and manages a Continuous Improvement culture.
• Champions an open and honest, inclusive culture throughout the operation.
• Participates in all of the Board of Director activities and represents its best interests at all times.
• Champions the Quality, health, safety and environmental policies at all times

Key Accountabilities

• Manage budget of up to £7m per annum (including procurement)
• Contribute to the development of the business strategy, ensuring sound understanding of relevant markets.
• Appreciates and influences the values and ethical strategies, forging key alliances.
• Lead by example, promote Company values and coach teams to be the best they can be.
• Facilitates a culture of high standards and attention to detail, with clear accountabilities, ownership, teamwork and personal learning.
• Challenge the status quo and champion a culture of continuous improvement to maximise quality and profit and reduce costs.
• Develops the team’s capability, managing and rewarding where appropriate for success.
• Delegates responsibilities / authority levels within team.
• Plans for succession, creating a talent pool for the future.
• Maintains excellent inter-department relationships and communication across the whole business to ensure the delivery of business objectives
• Benchmarks and networks externally, keeping abreast of relevant developments in own specialist field
• Acts as an ambassador for the company

• Flatten peaks and troughs in production thus reduce temporary labour needs.
• Buy v make decisions – bring some work back in-house (fabrication, welded assemblies, machining).
• Build up service/aftermarket offering.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
• Ideally First Degree in Engineering or similar technical discipline.
• Previous Operations Management experience within a similar business environment.
• Proven ability to demonstrate business transformation or change management with measurable results.
• Able to introduce standards measures and KPIs to drive improvement.
• Experienced in capital equipment or similar
• Strong, practical experience of Lean / CI implementation.
• Track record of change management leading to tangible benefits.

Desirable Skills / Qualifications:
• Management training or professional qualifications desirable.
• Background knowledge in Mining, Oil and Gas or Electrical Controls industry sector
• Experience working within an SME organization preferred.
• Experience of small / low volume sub assemblies or turnkey systems
